if you need it to survive, set yourself a booze budget, then never go over it(leave the extra money in the flat if you have to) this will ensure that you will not need to busk for your food in the morning.
Now think about it, do you think you could eat and drink for £3, no way. You might just be able to afford a cooked breakfast + drink + snack if you are lucky(maybe my uni is expensive?). But £3 a day is not enough in my opinion. The books are about £30 each, and each module requires at least one. you could use the library, but you have to plan ahead. Read your study guides early, and get the books before anyone else.
Why don't you draw up an estimated cost table thingy. For each day of the week, write down how much each meal will cost. Then have a column of general costs, eg,

If you want to make lots of friends easily and quickly, you will proably need to join clubs

Edited to say why does your dad need to change his mind? It really is up to you to start supporting yourself at uni, and while it helps to have money from relatives especially with fees and no grants, you need to be able to stand on your own two feet. Look into all the funding options available to you, open a decent student bank account and think about getting a part time job.
Hope that helps

£3 is not enough! Show your dad this page and I am sure he will change his mind!
For money I've got a part time job and I'll be working hard over the summer and saving the money up so when I go down to Kent I will have enough money so that I could survive for a few weeks while I looked for a part time job down there. Also getting a student loan which will help a lot. I've got loads of forms to fill in for that though. It's annoying!!
it's true! we have 'porters' (security guards, basically) who patrol the student village where i live (or sit on their arses and watch telly, whichever takes their fancy) and sort out things that go wrong etc. we go to their little office to get change for the laundry, but if it's paper money - send the girls. wear a tight top, flutter their eyelashes a bit, works a treat , wheras the blokes are told to fuck off!
on another subject, PussyKatty is right - i bought loads of text books coz the lecturers told me i needed them, and some of them i havn't even opened properly! so go to the library if you can - or find one textbook that covers lots of areas and buy that . . .
Well, if you are in halls and you are catered for that's probably about right because all you've got to buy is lunch and maybe a bus ticket.
If you are feeding yourself, then I would say £5 a day is enough.
If you have bills etc, each one (gas, electric, phone) costs about a pound a week and food about £25 a week.
I of course don't include beer money in these estimates!
