The UK is well and truly fucked if the Argies decide to use more aggressive tactics on this one. In case anyone hasn't noticed yet - OUR COUNTRY IS BANKRUPT. We simply don't have the money to fund such a war. There's not even enough money to fund the two we're already involved in.

    We're not bankrupt dude.

we're broke, it's not the same as bankrupt :p

We've still got the best lending rating you can possibly get, and are one of only two economies in the world that has -always- had the AAA rating along with the US. That means if given a choice, people will lend money to the UK government rather than anyone else (at the same rate) because we are 'good for it' as determined by the people who come up with these numbers (who are independent!).

Argentina meanwhile, was actually bankrupt a few years ago - they defaulted on their debts meaning accountants had to go in and sell some palaces or something idk to fund the debt!

Something slightly unsettling about being called dude. Much like when Jim V is going "hey man", trying to get down with the kids... :p

About that - enjoy it whilst it lasts. Our credit rating as a nation is currently under severe threat of being downgraded due to the ridiculously high debts we've got.

Oh yea, I fully believe we have the best trained and most effective forces in the world ;) just I am always worried about jumping into conversations about technicals as it just turns into a jerk off over our soldiers fest.

I think what the first falklands conflict showed though was how the international community was on our side. America was the notable exception in being useless, but France hacked Argentinas defence systems to tell us where all their ships were ;), and many other countries took over our patrolling duties so we could commit resources to the conflict.

I think if anything the international support we have is more important now than ever.

Sorry just saw this. I've never heard of France hacking Argentinian defence systems. if you mean radio comms GCHQ did that on its own. The US also did also provide sat imagery, sidewinders and most importantly also took on UK Naval duties in NATO. It also is rumoured to have offered an aircraft carrier if the UK crewed it - Thatcher turned it down.

On International support its not quiet like you suggest. In the UN security council the UK sponsored resolution 502 had 10 votes for (including the US - though admittedly their ambassador had wanted to abstain and was directly ordered to vote for), 1 against Panama and 4 abstentsions - unsurprisingly China, Poland and the USSR and more surprisingly (or perhaps not) Spain.

    According to....?

Not Mervyn King for sure. This week he said about the AAA rating "I cannot think of any reason why the UK should lose it. It would be most peculiar if this should happen."

Which is why the Argentines wont be wanting to give us an excuse to pull out of the two we're in...

The Argentinians are trying to get a "our gang is bigger than your gang" thing going by getting other South American countries to gang up on us and tell us we should give the islands up.

Since when has anybody cared what Nicuagura or Venuzela thought are beyond me.

another war in the Falklands would be a blessing for the next government and would provide a welcome boost to the British economy

As everyone else has said it probably wont happen.. lets just hope that it doesn't. It's so stupid in the 21st century to be dying over a freezing miniature version of wales in the south atlantic.
All major conflicts are over resources and swelling populations. Ten years down the road, that oil/gas will probably be well worth fighting over, but it's never too soon to start planning for it...
