I was thinking more of the time when the Church expanded economically, grabbing land and fighting with princely types to gain control of Europe, the Middle East and even parts of Africa.
Pretty sure I said it was rarely used. Last time it was used was in the 1950's by the Pope at the time (forget who it was) to state that when Mary was done on Earth (ie, about to kick the bucket), God took her up to heaven with her body and soul intact so spare her from dying.
Regardless, it's early days. We don't know what the Pope intends to do with these new sins. And yes, Catholics are free to criticise what the Pope says, but they pretty much have to accept when the church decides on things like what dictates whether a person goes to hell or not.
My housemate has just informed me that he has just committed genetic manipulation for the sake of his disertation.
Probably was if he tried to expand a religion that was punishable by death in the Roman Emperor till the 4th Century AD. The zenith of Papal expansion happened between the pontificates of Gregory VII and Innocent III c.1075-1300, before that the Papacy was a minor player in Europe.
