The Vatican announces 7 new deadly sins

... in addition to the existing ones. They are:

Environmental pollution
Genetic manipulation
Accumulating excessive wealth
Inflicting poverty
Drug trafficking and consumption
Morally debatable experiments
Violation of fundamental rights of human nature

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/7287071.stm

It's good to see the Catholic Church keeping in with modern times :D

Particularly interesting are the ones about excessive wealth and crimes against nature. I wonder how Catholic millionaires or drivers of Chelsea tractors are going to feel when when they find out they're going to Hell for all eternity unless they confess their sinful ways regularly.

Considering that confessions are nowadays uncommon amongst even Catholics themselves (and obviously non existent amongst other religions) and that the 7 original sins include such gems as anger or lust, you have to wonder if there is anyone at all in Heaven...
Beep boop. I'm a bot.

Does this include same sex experimentation?

If so, I'll probably need a new hobby.

    Environmental pollution - good
    Genetic manipulation - bad
    Accumulating excessive wealth - good
    Inflicting poverty - good
Drug trafficking and consumption - bad on consumption part, ffs.
    Morally debatable experiments - bad
Violation of fundamental rights of human nature - bad, some situations require it so.

Some god, some bad. Some fail epicially, expecially as Alcohol is a drug. No more wine for Catholics. No more blood of Christ, cermonially speaking. SP on that one, too?

They're guilty of at least 3 of those at an institutional level. Nice to see the Catholic church still enjoys telling everyone else how to live, while carrying on committing all the "sins" themselves.

Organised religion at its best. It's been doing it since it began.

Jesus says cling not to material wealth, give it up. Vatican says "Oh hai, give us money or u all go 2 hell!"

So "thou shalt not carry out morally dubious scientific experiments" or "thou shalt not pollute the earth" might one day be added to the Ten Commandments.

ho-ho-ho. Oh that David Willey! I wish I had his sparkling BBC wit.

    What a lovely man:
The archbishop brushed off cases of sexual violence against minors committed by priests as "exaggerations by the mass media aimed at discrediting the Church".

I don't think we need cases of child abuse to discredit the church. We have your holy books for that.

It's nice that they are trying to keep up with the times, but I thought that the 7 deadly sins and the 10 commandments were God's will. Who are we as people to come up with some more....?

They'd rather not debate questions of morality - just play it safe and presume you go to hell?

In my opinion, many of the world's problems today have been caused by the biggest sin committed by the Catholic Church itself - their stand against contraception.

Our rain forests are being destroyed because of human encroachment, there is so much poverty in the world which, in turn, produces more drug problems and violence etc, etc. So many of the world's problems are due to uncontrolled population increases.

Their continued insistence that it is a greater sin to wear a condom than it is to bring an unwanted child into the world that cannot be fed, cared for, or educated, is an unforgivable sin.

Grand opening - Grand closing (I sincerely hope)

I notice that one of God's PR people was at pains to brush aside observations of hypocrisy on the issue of sexual violence against children as 'media manipulation to discredit the church'

The ten commandments were supposedly Gods will, but the seven deadly sins were introduced a few centuries after Christ's death by one of the Popes. A skeptic might say they were designed to contradict basic human emotion and desire (anger, lust etc.), so that in order to save oneself from being damned for all eternity, they would need to turn to the church for forgiveness. Kind of like an early version of Scientology's "Giving us your money is the only way to get rid of your thetans!"

Of course there's 'Papal Infallibility', which basically states that anything the Pope says (simplified... he has to actually invoke Papal Infallibility and it's rarely used) will be held true in heaven by God by way of the Holy Spirit. Then there's 'Infallibility of the Church' which I'm not entirely sure on, but it's like a watered down version of Papal Infallibility which states the Holy Spirit won't allow the church to err in its teachings. So by way of specious elimination, these new sins are obviously true and just or the Holy Spirit wouldn't have allowed them to surface.

From a comic, a conversation between an angel and a dead man:
-Without sin, we'd be without a job. But thankfully everything has been taken care of.
    -What do you mean?
-The seven deadly sins, for example. They're made so that no one escapes! If you believe that you're better than others you commit the sin of pride. If you think that the others are better than you, you commit the sin of envy.
If you don't care about how you look and eat all you want, you commit the sin of gluttony. If you go on a diet to be successful with the other sex, you commit the sin of lust.
If you want material goods and fight to obtain them, you commit the sin of greed. If you hate riches and hate the materialistic view on life, you commit the sin of wrath.
-But this is terrible! So, whatever you do, you're guilty! In order not to sin, you have to do absolutely nothing!
-Of course not. In that case you commit the sin of sloth!

LOL... it's funny because it's true.

I can't believe some people still not realise the Catholic Church (and others) are just instruments of control. You don't need to obey their rules to be a good person, or even a good Christian,

Ah well. It could be Scientology, so I am willing to put up with Catholics for now.

There's enough food and money in the world for nobody to ever starve. Sadly the top1% have it all and everyone else is left to starve. There are not more people on the planet than there are resources to support them.

The only other use of contraception is to prevent the spread of venereal disease. Which, of course, will be controlled far more adequately by keeping one's cock in one's pants.

That may well be but until the world is in a position to help those stranded in that situation, contraception is the lesser of two evils; a few million sperm trapped in a condom? Or a few million children trapped in abject poverty?

But that's not going to work though, is it? Whil ehumans have a sex drive, they will take risks.

That's actually not quite the case though. There might be enough food to feed everyone today- but there are not enough natural resoruces to cope for much longer.

There are far more people living on this planet than ever before. The numbers will continue to grow at an increasing rate. This planet simply cannot sustain 6bn people indefinitely, let alone 9bn in as little as 40 years.

Something has got to give, unless we cut our numbers.

And as for the food, not once in human history (outside perhaps the odd and small hippie commune) have men been capable of sharing food and wealth with others. Nor is that likely to happen in the future. Certainly no within our lifetime. So it is completely irresponsible, a death sentence for millions in fact, to speak against contraception in Third World countries, or indeed in any country where the poor receive no help.

I would argue that we are overpopulated though. I mean look at all the nature destroyed, animals extinctified :p, natural land used for farming.

There is enough food, but can the earth and the wider biosphere support our demand for it? Especially with the human population still growing. Even if you did basic GCSE biology you'll have learnt that any eco system needs some kind of natural balance, and you can come up with ways to try to artificially extend the balance but there comes a limit. Look at the size of the Amazon rainforest compared to 100 years ago. That's a lot due to logging and mining which is all to support the human way of life.

We're overdue for some kind of event to reduce the species down a bit. I'm not trying to fear monger, I just think the human race has expanded too far.

This holy spirit seems to be in conflict with god then ...seeing as the infalible popes have their minions bowing before idols ...something detestable to god according to the book ...and praying to some woman ...not allowed ...plaster saints to bow down to o ho ho!
Teaching men not to marry ...according to the bible thats the teaching of demons ...popes and bishops wearing hats that represent the fish god dagon ...i could go on but we've been here before. Anyone who believes the catholic church is a christian organisation understands nowt about xristianty.

The Papal Infalibility argument is balls, the Pope only has infalibility if he sits on St Peter's throne and starts talking which Popes pretty much never do, Catholics are free to criticise what the Pope says. :)

Since the first pope i think you'll find. He used to worship the sun and the fish god dagon and ...kill xtrians.
When he realised how big this xctrianity was growing and how fast he decided if you can't eat them join them and so ...he had a remarkable conversionand not only became a xrtian but decided he was going run the show. ...and it came to poass that ...he then conned all the nice xtrian folk by adding sun worship and easter bunnies and all manner of his old religous stuff to the party and basicly destroyed a massive section of christianity. the first pope ...can't remember his name now but i'm sure google could tell you all about him.
Bit like mrs Thatcher destroying socialism realy ...she knew how hated she had made the tory party so ...she got her son tony to pretend he was labour ...brand new labour even ...and the rest is history.
This is all from the gospel according to the roll.
