    It's amazing how little violence there is under totalitarian regimes.

    But the question is, was 'totalitarianism' necessary to keep Iraq together? There is a good case to suggest there was, and perhaps still is.

    Under Saddam, Iraq prospered with an established middle class; if you accepted the status quo, you were left to get about your business.

    Now over 300,000 have died and the country is polluted with DU. Saddam was no saint, but on those facts, it's hard to see how he couldn't have been the lesser of two evils.

    Bit stupid really, they'll leave, 10or 20 years down the line they'll have to go back to sort it all out again.
