Barbeques

Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
I've decided to have a BBQ this weekend (weather permitting) using a few of those disposable ones. What kind of food should I use?

I've thought of:

Burgers
Sausages
Chops

Any suggestions as to what else could I cook?

Cheers :thumb:

Make your own burgers! It's really easy, get some lean mince, chop some onions really finely and get an egg, mush them all together and create burger shapes. Stick them in the fridge to harden them a little, then whack them on the bbq :) they're much better.

Do you have any specialist food shops where you are? If you have a South African shop close by, try to track down some boerevors, it's a yummy boar sausage with spices and works a treat on a bbq.

Def make your own burgers

Also, fish wrapped in foil works well on a bbq, otherwise it's helpful to have a fish rack thing because it does tend to fall apart. Try salmon in foil with a little garlic, grated ginger and a couple of drops of sweet chilli sauce :)

You have got to have Corn on the Cob and Baked Potato's. Just wrap the potato's in foil and place on the coals. :yum:

Sardines & Tuna Steaks are great on the BBQ also.

Cheers guys! Giving me a few ideas here! Keep 'em coming!

go_away - I'm really intrigued about that! There's a shop closeby too! Are they expensive? JamesZero - I can't really afford a proper one and at any rate, we'll all be pissed so I doubt we should be messing around with a canister of gas and a naked flame!

We always used to have chicken of various types-chinese, garlic and herb etc. Our local butcher sold them in trays.

Bananas bbq-d in their skins for afters, split down the middle and stuffed with chocolate buttons was lways a favourite when I was a younger person than I am now.

    £7.99p :)

Gas barbecues are shit, you might as well just grill your food.

Fresh pineapple seared on each side is nice with sausages/pork chops, and they're on offer in Tesco at the moment, just £1.

I don't know I'm afraid, the man always prepares the meat and fire! I don't think it's too expensive. Whatever the cost, it's so worth it, and it comes rolled up (like a snail shape) so you can just stick it whole on the bbq.

If you are cooking on a disposable BBQ, then I think sausages are a mistake, they need longer at a higher setting, but you dont get settings on those crap boxes.

You should stick with things that just need high heat and a quick cook, so either thin breasts of chicken which is marinaded or beef.

the disposable ones are in our pound shop what we have done is get 6 of them and align them in a 3x3 grid and remove more of the charcoal from the bottom 3 and put them in the top 3, we found that it makes the top 3 considerably hotter, and the bottom 3 had a more gentle heat, ideal for sausages, tuna wrapped in tin foil with lime, lemongrass and chilli flakes is amazing.

My sausages always cook fine on disposable BBQ's, but then again, I am the queen of BBQ cooking

Get some kebabs on there.. and steak.. and have some sides too of savoury rice, potato salad etc and you'll be well away!

if you want something different you could have meat/chicken kebabs marinated in a yoghurt mix...i can give you a simple recipe if you have an arabic grocery store nearby.

Are any of your guests vegetarian? You could try:

    Vegetable kebabs

    Hallumi cheese on vegetable kebabs

    Corn-on-the-cob

    Jacket potatoes

Bean burgers (wrap in foil if there are likely to fall apart), vegetable 'burgers'
