The big problem with smoking is just the smoke. If someone wants to chew on a pack of 20 I couldn't care less.
non smokers are forced to consume a harmful product that they do not want.
if drugs addicts started taking their needles and injecting their drugs into people who just happen to be sitting on the table near them by force or simply throwing their needles into the air and having it be pot luck who gets hit no one would put up with it. But that's what happens to non smokers they're forced into consuming smoke.
It's not impossible to allow people to smoke and have the air inside a room filtered to remove it, have ionisers to send out ion's which help clean the air and ash trays which stop smoke people released into the air, but smokers couldn't be arsed to do anything like this, venue couldn't be arse to spend the money or put in the planning, etc .. when I plan an event I look at the way a venue is physically constructed very carefully because I know whether people attend or not will depends a lot of factors and the 2 things which stop people enjoying a night is the music is too loud to hold a conversation and the air is too ripe with smoke to breath without ill effects for non smokers.
We're not talking about 1 smoker affecting 1 non smoker - we're talking about 20, 30, 40 smokers in a room all lit up at the same time.
I personally cannot see why there cannot be an exception for some kind of smoking clubs, like a proper venue dedicated to smoking that is designed to only appeal to smokers, with safe guards to make sure the loop holes are closed - e.g. have these venues be members only, etc.
I have no problem with an air quality standard that can be measured, then venues have the choice to install air conditioning, etc and be fined for going over the limit, but the government have chosen an all or nothing approach .. those in rural areas where they have spare land will probably have the best chance of building their way out of the problem.
Yeah...Bollocks. Unless you live in a tiny hamlet with nothing more than a pub and a Church there's usually plenty of choice for basic work. (Starbucks, McDonald's, retail, restaurants, etc). Most people who work in pubs work there not because there's no alternative but because they like working in that kind of environment. Pay and benefits in retail or a chain like Starbucks are generally quite a bit better than a pub).
And it must be a tiny number of people who take work in a pub because that's the only job that they can get. From my experience at least working in a pub that is certainly the case. Supermarkets, fast food chains (Pret, Starbucks, McDonald's etc), Starbucks, Costa, etc in big towns/cities are pretty much always hiring. Hence why lots of people from Eastern Europe want to come here - because there are lots of jobs. Even in smaller towns it's often the case.
But that's a different thread.
That's if you believe that all smokers are going to suddenly stay at home.
That's not right likely.
And we go back to banning black people. But that's different because it makes your whole argument look petulant and moronic...
I'll be generous, and say that 35% of people in a pub smoke. That still means that 65% are being forced to breathe in their shit, and if you ask that 65%, I doubt you'll find many who actually want that to happen. I can't think of anyone who just loves the smell of tobacco and loves secondhand chemicals. Most, like me, will not mind the smokers as long as they're in another room, but that still means that the wishes of the majority are not only being ignored but are actually being trodden all over by smokers in the current situation.
I note that you didn't answer my questions, Dis. Try again, old chap, its a simple enough question. Why should I have a choice between breathing your cancer chemicals and staying at home simply because you are too fucking selfish to not stand outside for 30 seconds?
*holds breath for answer*
But what percentage of French people smoke?
Correct me if I'm wrong, but 50 years ago didn't they think somking was good for you or something?
Why should us non smokers have to stop going to pubs just so that we don't have to breathe in smoke and stink of smoke?
Is it just me, or do some of the smokers in thread not give a sh!t about non smokers' health when giving their opinions in this thread?
Who the hell cares if i used the wrong spelling? sad people like you clearly.
Back to the point, just accept the facts and stop trying to make out that people such as myself are exaggerating or making things up. My effects are NOT a common cold, they are the *affects* of second hand smoke, that i will no longer have to put up with when the smoking ban comes into effect. Hurrah suckers!
And I, along with all the other people should not have to suffer just because a few smokers are too selfish to walk outside to puff on their cancer sticks. They may be fine hindering their own health but they need to be more considerate about the health of people around them.
They're all just bitter because they lost their battle. They told us to "get over" and "dont go to pubs if we didnt like it" before the news of the ban, things have changed now and its about time. So why dont you all go and get on with it now and stop crying into your cigarette smoke. Nobody is forcing anyone to stop their dirty habits, just that you do it in a more considerate place.
32%. (This has already been answered on this thread).
You know very well that secondhand smoke has negative health affects, and you know very well that its selfish when some people cant have a social life because they have to avoid the smoke of others. I could go out every night if i wanted to, but currently that option would be made impossible because i would constantly feel ill. Yet nothing that a non smoker does is preventing a smoker from having a social life- you seem to all have double standards. Non smokers are supposed to work around smokers all the time, but the moment a new rule is put into place and your all suddenly throwing a fit because you have to work around us for a change. Well boo-fucking-hoo! Cant have a social life now can you? Because of course stepping outside to get faggy for a few minutes is going to ruin your entire night.
 Ridiculous.
Smokers seem to act like all non smokers are against them, when in fact its the other way round. You get all offended because people dont like you smoking around them, yet you fail to see that people that dont drink alcohol can share a pub/club/bar of alcohol drinkers happily and all have fun together, even though alcohol is harmful to health too. Its just the smoke we have a problem with, not the behaviour of smoking itself.
This thread still going?
Smoking stinks, it's unhealthy and affects the health of people who don't smoke. Anyone who believes otherwise is an idiot (IMHO).
For that reason it is only fair that non-smokers have places to go to socialise without having their health put at risk by the actions of others. Ditto people working in these establishments (if we'd stuck with the "you could always work somewhere else" argument, we'd still have kids up chimneys and no health and sfaety legislation, so don't waste time on that argument). As these places weren't coming about naturally, quickly enough for the Govt, law was implmented and voted on by our representatives. Don't like the result - tough shit, that's democracy.
Of course, the logical solution would be to have some places for smoking and some for non-smokers. How you would decide which pub was which would be difficult but that's what we are supposed to pay the buggers for. Still natually the workshy fuckers went for the easy option of banning. You can always vote them out at the next election, so if you are really fussed about this law you still have an option.
BTW I'm a smoker. I don't like the law but I understand why it's there. I'm not so selfish to ignore other people's health though and it's shameful that others are.
But then I can also see why non-smokers find this annoying and unfair on them, but as a smoker I'll stick to my opinion.
So was drink driving until the 80s...
Do the affects of smoking on non smokers not mean anything to you?
Yes, that is why I said that I can see why non-smokers consider it unfair and annoying because it is. However it is a kind of tradition in pubs and as a smoker I don't wish for it to be changed now, non-smokers have put up with smoking in pubs for so many years so why change it now, it's not like it's that easy to get cancer from spending a few hours in a smokey pub.
Obviously smokers and non-smokers are always going to want something different, the perfect solution would be to have smoking pubs and non-smoking pubs all over the country but that will never happen.
Although at work, we ask customers NOT to smoke at the bar, it rarely happens and its usually the case that I'm forced to breathe it in. This often results in me losing my voice as most of the time (on loud events) I have to shout alot. I've actually been reduced to a coughing fit before due to the amount of smoke I was breathing in. It wasn't pleasant.
When I go on a night out, I come home smelling of smoke. Its horrible. My clothes stink of it, my hair stinks of it and its just rank. I've also had many fag burns off people who were wasted whilst walking past me. Not nice either.
I'm a non smoker but I have been guilty of having the odd smokes in the past. Its nothing special. Its horrible and makes you smell. I once dated a smoker and it was horrible. Everytime I kissed him, it was like kissing a fag :yuck: No offence smokers. You might have good chewing gum...
I don't think its unreasonable to ban smoking in public places tbh. I don't think its fair that smokers expect other people to breathe in their smoke. I think its rather selfish tbh. I don't think its right that other people don't even cross their mind whilst they are puffing away. I once worked in a non smoking bar and it was great. There was a heated smoking area outside and nobody seemed to have a problem with it.
I don't have anything against smokers. People make their own choices and all that. However, I do think this is a step in the right direction and I do think that this should have happened YEARS ago. Smoking smells horrible and doesn't just affect the person breathing in that shit, it affects everyone else who is around you.
The first person in this thread to mention such things.
Woops, new one to me, like water of a worms back, the early stone catches the moss. Bla bla bla bla bla!
Stick to the topic...
Any sellotape?
That's what really gets me. If the goverment really gave a fuck, they'd ban it all together. So obviosuly they don't care about our health, so why not allow a compromise?
I'm glad I have a shit sense of humour because I've been managing to laugh at you
