    At least space shuttles don't mysteriously dye and shrink your clothes ! and in the above scenario, you'd get em dry en all <IMG alt="image" SRC="http://www.thesite.org/ubb/biggrin.gif"&gt;

    *actually* that wasnt a technical faliure as such, at least not in the shuttle's computers. it had been very cold for a few days before the launch, and the seals on the fuel tank had become more brittle, and when it took off, they cracked in the sudden heat change and fuel leaked and then exploded.

    incidentally, the crew almost certainly survived the explosion, due to the shielding on their crew capsule. the capsule can be seen falling thru the air, and they probably only died when it hit the ocean, 2 minutes later . . . . . . . . .

    Which space shuttle we talking about?!? The footage I saw was of a shuttle being ripped apart by a huge explosion, I never heard of the crew surviving that, no matter how tough something is, chances are a massive hydrogen explosion like that would singe your arse a bit.

    I'm sure that was a great comfort to the crew... they had an extra 2 minutes to fully empty their bowels.

    Baby's right. The bodies were discovered, strapped in their seats. I can see the humour in it, just as they think they've survived a huge explosion...

    According to the Oxford English Dictionary

    Feminism
    1. The qualities of females.

    2. [After F. féminisme.] Advocacy of the rights of women (based on the theory of equality of the sexes).

    I came back online today and read this thread, and there's one thing that's really really bothering me. A feminist is anyone who believes in equality of the sexes. Now, obviously, as with any active group, there are going to be people who take this too far.

    And yes, I am angry at some activists for how far they've taken some things. I don't like, for example, the fact that I have had people tell me that I obviously don't believe in Women's Rights because I'm taking Arts courses, and not taking advantage of the opportunities to get involved in science and maths based courses.

    But then again, I think that there are still many areas where discrimination can be seen. Yes, women are doing equal work for equal pay and all that, but how few women are there in managerial positions? And please don't tell me this is just because women are crap at their jobs.

    As for divorce agreements, the situation varies from family to family, and I can see that changing more in years to come. In many cases with women who were married in the 70s and possibly the 80s, they hadn't developed a career beforehand. My mother, for example, was a housewife who did volunteer work, organising for the most part. When she left my dad she realised that no one wanted to hire a woman in her 40s who had no "real" experience under her belt, and had to take some very low paying jobs. In her case, she received no support from my dad (until I lived with her, and even then the support was nominal), left him the house, the car, and all their joint belongings as she felt it was unfair to demand anything after leaving him. Every divorced woman I know is like this, but they don't provide an interesting read, so they tend to be left out of newspapers.

    I just don't like the generalisations on what women are and aren't good at. If any of you saw the Channel 4 documentary "Why Men Can't Iron" (aired in Fall 1998), it showed that there are indeed differences between what men and women are good at. It showed that women are better at housework because they can concentrate on more than one thing at a time, but isn't multi-tasking an essential skill for a manager?

    *awaits flaming*

    Some good points there SnowWhite.

    I dont know how many women are in managerial positions throughout the company but the company I work for is almost exclusively female in the higher roles. The Director of the company is a male because he founded the company but all the senior accountants, all the site managers(19 sites), all the site admins bar 2, all the office staff from data inputter up to the financial controller are all female. There is one male accountant.

    When I went for an interview at the Tesco HQ in welwyn I saw 2 males on the security desk and no other males. The first interview was conducted solely by females. The second group workshop day was overseen by a female boss and the majority of the interviewers were female.

    Im sure that there are more men in management positions in general but is that because women dont get chosen or is it because fewer women apply?

    You pointed out the channel4 show and I think that proves an interesting point..The very fact that a show titled why men cant iron shows the sexism toward men. Can you imagine a show called 'Why women cant make good managers'..

    Generalisations work both ways <IMG alt="image" SRC="http://www.thesite.org/ubb/smile.gif"&gt;

    Glad to see you back here btw <IMG alt="image" SRC="http://www.thesite.org/ubb/biggrin.gif"&gt;

    There are few women in managerial positions because they have an alarming tendancy to disappear from the workplace for months at a time whilst they have children.

    An interviewer, given a choice between a man of thirty, and a woman of thirty, whith the same capabilities, would be mad to give it to the woman, because, in all likelihood, she won't be around much. Even if she does get the job, then her male colleagues will accelerate past her when she takes time off to have children and they are still in the office, no matter how good she is.

    You can't beat biology through feminism I'm sorry to say.

    Although, you could make things better by giving equal parental rights to men...

    the space shuttle was 'Challenger 51L' and it exploded on 28th Jan 1986 because a rubber O-ring froze, they were not meant to be used below about 10C and it was -10C. When the boosters ignited the O-ring broke and a stream of hydrogen and oxygen was released. This caught fire and burnt through the part that held the booster in place, then at 73 seconds the booster turned in towards the fuel tank and the whole thing exploded in a huge fireball. the crew WERE alive but as they fell from 40,000ft and hit the water at 180-220mph, which would have killed all the crew instantly. You are prob all bored now after reading this but it is a pretty accurate description of what happened.

    It's not that men can't iron - no-one who's not been in the Forces in some capacity can. <IMG alt="image" SRC="biggrin.gif" border="0"> Ok, that's something of a glib comment, but my experience does bear it out to some extent.

    Feminism was originally about the ability to choose... Germaine Greer for example started out campaigning that women should be ABLE to choose to work at the same pay level as men etc, but the fact is that people tend to take a good idea too far - most jobs etc that equal rights bang on about (like the lack of female mechanics and engineers for example) are employed by skill, and the fact is, men have better spatial awareness and make better mechanics, and pilots. I personally know females who don't want a career (just want to get married and have babies) and they're told that there's something wrong with that. I think women are thinking that because we HAVEN'T had the ability to choose in the past, we should get priority, which is bollocks.

    I'm puzzling over the point you are trying to make <IMG SRC="confused.gif" border="0" ALT="icon">.

    I would welcome you to expand upon your comments to clarify your views about 'feminism'.
