You see, this is exactly what I resent about this whole debate.
Because I don't sit here going "hey, the sexual objectification of people is a good thing!!!", I'm suddenly a "staunch conservative".
There is nothing wrong with nudity, or showing it. Lets get that much clear.
There is everything wrong with the way in which the media has created an edifice of people as objects, accessories to be used, and discarded if they grow life-expired.
The media exists to market. Unhappy people consume more. The easiest way of making people unhappy is to objectify them to an unachievable standard, and the easiest way of increasing consumption is to make people just another designer accessory.
I wouldn't want to see lads mags banned, but they should be treated as what they are- pornography.
Firstly, you don't have much experience with women. Your requests for advice illustrate that much.
If you think its an insult, then its no wonder you think everyone hates you.
Oh, grow up.
Debating is about challenging what people say. If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen.
Being women, with women friends, they're in far more position to comment than a boy who's terrified of the pretty girl in the office. That's not an insult, that's a fact.
Getting back to the point, it is not "prudish" to think that the lads mags, and the objectification of sex and sexuality is disturbing. It is not prudish to think the pornography industry does far more harm than good.
and you know there were more insults in there then that i.e cretin etc and there was no reason to bring in personal things about myself with no permission and when you don't know me.
It doesn't matter if they are women, it doesn't change the fact that women do that and they cannot say they don't.Its all subjective. Don't you understand that??
So humans are told what to like and what not to like?
How come every single person in the world has some sort of fetish?
Says who though? How many men do you know thinks lads mags objectify women, is it a subconscious thing?
Don't be so simpleminded.
Something to do with early associations in childhood I think. Which kind of proves the point that sexual preferences are not entirely genetically determined.
Not really, you continually make the point that lads mags are telling us to objectify women and that us sheep just do it. Not the case.
Except that I haven't argued anything of the sort. That's just your simplistic interpretation.
It's not personal if its in the public domain.
And yes, it is relevant if you're trying to tell women they're wrong.
Turlough, if you're going to use arguments a four-year-old would be ashamed of, then what's the point?
Many parts of human sexuality are influenced by society, and by environmental factors when you are very young and impressionable. Teenage boys are young and impressionable.
It's not a case of being told what to think, but if a human is told enough times what he should find sexually attractive, then he will find that sexually attractive.
Do you find hair attractive or unattractive? If it is so objective, why do English and American men find hair unagttractive, yet in Europe it is not the same.
Ok you've just said that lads mags objectify women.
So if men aren't objectifying them, then what's the problem other than "it's an unhealthy state of affairs"
4 year olds can read and be asahemd of political debate. :shocking:
Yes. They do.
:banghead:
Now now, my 2 year old brother would be ashamed of that!
ive always found it a bit odd myself
and ive liked big breasts since i was like 6
You seem to think that I'm saying its a direct conscious process.
You either have to adhere to conservative values or accept that as a result of sexual liberation, people will be sexually objectified.
People are selfish and will use others to suit their desires. Whether it's casual sex, falling in love, whatever...people look after themselves and their own desires before all else. If you're shagging women for fun and don't want any emotional involvement, then you are objectifying them by default. And in such a society, there's obviously going to be reflection of this in the media.
It's worth noting consumerism, because it obviously plays a part, but you can't treat it as the over-riding factor. Sexual liberation and inherent desire for the most attractive partner are equally, if not more so, important.
Also you mentioned something about socialisation of sexual attraction using the example of continental women & body hair - this is merely a cultural difference. British men aren't going to turn down french or italian women or ecessarily going to find them any less attractive just because they don't shave a bit of body hair
men objectify women ...
That will never change.
If it's not an evident direct conscious process then how do you know it's happening?
I give up.
*unsubscribes from thread*
Suck me beautiful!
some people wish they could manipulate six thousand years of written history to fit with their pc but it aint gonna happen.
tits and arse ...lips hairs and eyes etc etc ... men being the physicaly stronger partner ...therefore the dominant one ...will always be.
Aye.
It's so obvious that it's unreal.
Of course, to suggest otherwise has dangerous implications for certain ideologies.
every society that ever reaches a moment where it deems itself modern and sucsessful seems to start tearing apart what made it so ...all in good faith and enlighenment etcc ...
it is very onesided as well.
the male is an agressive cunt all the time to all females.
not true of course.
while the female just lies back and takes ...but never joins in ...the supposed abuse.
i would imagine that modern thinkers like blgsta imagine that when i was born in the fifties ...most men kicked and punched their wives on a regular basis.
again ...so untrue.
if anything ...modern life and modern thinking has ...caused more violence and more broken homes but ...thats probably for another thread knowing this lot ...
The ideal world and real world shouldn't mix.
Refusing to accept various aspects of inherent human tendency and nature because it doesn't fit into your ideological structure which holds that we're all just blank canvasses can only create problems for society...
Errrr....what the fuck are you and mr on about? "Refusing to accept various aspects of inherent human tendency and nature"? Who the hell is doing that? What I am arguing is that ideals of beauty and sex appeal are cultural - and if you're denying that then its *you* "Refusing to accept various aspects of inherent human tendency and nature because it doesn't fit into your ideological structure". I have *never* argued "we're all just blank canvasses". Stop being so dense.
*unsubsribes again*
What makes you think i was referring to you?
as for subscribing and unsubscribing ...i have never done it ...don't have a clue what it does but ...it obviously doesn't have much effect ...
well that went way over your head
I already rubbished this example, right back at the start of the thread, so i am not going to go through it all again.
Can I just ask what the reaction would be if you had said that the media was responsible for making people gay?
