Why does porn exist at all?

I know I know, seems like a stupid question. (As usual! I hear you cry)
But the violent porn thread got me thinking about why porn exists at all.
Is it an industry selling itself like all industries do, warping peoples tastes for it's own benefit?
Is it due to the sexual starvation of men?
Is it the result of feminism and the opening up of new areas previously taboo?
Or just the general dehumanisation that goes along with having too many people in too small a space manifesting itself in sexuality?
For myself, I can see that a desire for it has been stimulated and is being stoked by the industry. I also know that men in happy, fulfilling relationships tend to watch less or no porn (or less/no porn on their own) because they are having their own needs met and don't feel the urge to get the tissues out so often.
So it it a symptom or a cause?

People- including many women- watch porn for a number of reasons. One of them being because they like it. Like everything else in life, where there is demand for something, supply is provided.
Yes, I said that. Should have made it clearer though.
A previous Mrs.K brought me a stackload of stuff back from amsterdam once, it was more like a fortnight of scratched backs and bitten shoulders. Ahh memories. Except for the one with the dwarves, didn't get that at all.
That uncalled for I apologise, erm I suppose it all comes down to a variety of reasons, the main ones being; hardcore masturbators/teens, people looking for something different in their sex life, unsatisfied sex lives, couples etc
It exists, therefore people watch, therefore it exists etc
Why does it exist? The imperfection of mankind.
That is why it exists.
You can't really compare the two things, the social and economic contexts are utterly different.
My mate had one with a dwarf dressed like santa. It scared me.
I'm not sure what you mean. Whilst there are obvious differences the idea that men (and women) voyeuristically enjoying watching people having sex or representations of them doing so the idea this arrived with either capitalism or the invention of the camera seems a slightly naive idea.
Technology and culture has changed how we view pornography/erotica/art but did not invent it
:banghead:
It because we live in the society where all people want to do is get famous. There was recently a survey done by my local newspaper which asked girls aged between 10 and 14 what they wanted to do when they were older. Somethign daft like 75% wanted to be like Jordan or Abi Titamuss.
word!
we know oh so well mr pronzo
"The imperfection of mankind?" *guffaws loudly*
It exists because of sex drive - something without which mankind wouldn't exist in the first place.
I think you will find the vast majority of porn is made for and watched by men, yes some women enjoy porn and a lot of women watch porn because their partners like it, but a lot of those only do it because of their partners.
Now maybe thats because there isn't that much porn aimed at women, or maybe because woman "generally" just don't find porn interesting.
Also depends on how you define porn, a racy "mills and boon novel", would maybe attact a lot of women, but could it be classed as porn.
some mills and boon is very gratuitous its jsut not visual
and i know plenty of women who like pornography....
In what sense? Do you believe watching pornography is submitting to "sinful behaviour"?
not another "I think you will find the vast majority........." comments
women like porn, its true, i know of a couple of users on this site, who are female, are single, and enjoy eatching mainstream made for men pron
Women are way too hard to get with. Their expectations are incredibly, selfishly, almost unattainably, high. The only reason why is because they can.
Porn is created for men. Why? Because of an immense sex drive of which women are absent. Plain and simple. Women generally run off emotions, men generally run off rationality.
Example:
Woman: "I want to have sex. I'm going to go out and meet someone. I want to meet a really nice guy and connect with him completely."
Man: "Oh, she's hot. I'm gonna bang her."
Now, back to Mister Moneyshot. Excuse me.
I would like to think that I except the biblical teachings, although I have stayed from them as has everyone else and will continue to do so, I'm sure.
I think it's weak of men to use porn to satisfy themselves, having said that I like looking at women as much as the next man.
I don't think it's a healthy way of life and it "can" lead to an impression of women as sex objects who are there purely to satisfy men.
Very scientific survey that

Romance fiction comprises 54.5 percent of all popular fiction sold in North America
Romance fiction comprises 35.8 percent of all popular fiction sold
Some 93 percent of all romance readers are women
There might be something in the idea that man and women aren't relating to each other as they might ideally be, isn't there.
and so are your general assumptions
I felt like that once, right after I messed up with my first girlfriend at 16, the years 16-20 were just like that for me.Then I realised that women wanted men as much if not more than men wanted women, quiet an eye opener that.
I felt like that once as well, but I've found out they want it a hell of a lot and at weird times too. Admittidly I want it every time I see a girl in a short skirt as well.
your wife wont like that

More than 32 million unique individuals visited a porn site in Sept. of 2003. Nearly 22.8 million of them were male (71 percent), while 9.4 million adult site visitors were female (29 percent)
(Nielsen/Net Ratings, Sept. 2003).
71% I'd call that the vast majority myself.
I admit my faults, I'm a man, I never said I was perfect (I'm not a woman).
