why is it that people seem to have different classes of immigrants?

i was chatting to one of my boyfriend's friends about the european elections, and he was saying he'd vote for the BNP because he is sick of immigrants (he's well meaning, but very misguided).

when i pointed out that i was a third generation immigrant, and did he have a problem with me and my family, he said that it was different. apparently 'western' (my family are Polish :chin: ) immigrants are acceptable, but 'eastern' immigrants are bad. and i've noticed a lot of people seem to have this view. it's ok for americans and australians, and some europeans to move over and 'take our jobs', but as soon as you start on with, say, asians, they lose the plot. why? is this little more than ignorance and racism, or is there something else going on?

Excellent point, one that a lot of the anti-immigration people would deny they hold or that exists among those with similar views....

Basically it is either racism or bullshit arguments about culture.......

I've had that too Kaff, never fails to amaze me how some try and justify their ignorance.

Yes there is a lot of +ve discrimination and that yes, there could be a black interviewer, it doesn't mean there is some culling of 'racists' or should I say of ppl who maybe should be doing the interviewing

Are you supporting racism? I merely said racists weren't as able to survive in a multicultural society, and you say that they should be the interviewers. I don't think we're thinking along the same lines...

Socialisation is a product of our environment, not out genes i would have thought those wolf children gave quite good evidence to support this.

    I would hope not

It would uncomfortable for a as you call them racist to be employed in the Public Sector which seems to prize Diversity over all else, including efficiency. if I were a racist and came across a black interviewer, I would just come out with the expected spiel about valuing Diversity dadidadida. I've posted on other threads about the unmerited meteoric rise of minorities in the Public Sector so I, as a cynic, just might query how the black interviewer arrived at their present post.

As for the 'survivability of the racist in a multicultural society' - what a bizarre line of thought

I know it is, but look at our moral standards. With each generation 'bad' moral standards are further ironed out to make us 'ultra pc ultra nice' people. It's because people being nice to other people is the most succesful set up, so these people generally fare better than people who grow up with bad norms etc. It's true these can be changed but imagine living the first 20 years of your life in a heavily racist close-knit community, and then hitting the big wide world. Then look at someone who's learnt good manners etc, respects all others, comes into the world and knows how to get by without upsetting anyone and so on.

It's my opinion that the person who has been brought up to be tolerant has a higher likelihood of survival in society. I doubt the racist would die as such, but would only be able to attain and keep a low-level job etc.

So you think most non-white people in high positions are there due to positive discrimination, ladymuck?

How do you know those feelings aren't being supressed? Just like homosexuality decades ago racism today is frowned up so for all we know the majority of racists are just supressing thier feelings so they are not frowned upon by everyone else.

Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear....

I assume that you have evidence to show that a there is a higher percentage of ethnic minority in top jobs than is refelected in the population?

Funny that reports I see seem to suggest quite the opposite.....

But racism isn't really governed by genes - so if someone grows up to be non-racist I doubt they will have 'deep inner feelings' of racial hatred that they will have to suppress. It started as xenophobia, and then developed to a large scale hatred. Now people have overcome that. There's no gene that makes people hate other races.

There is evidence to suggest however, that homosexuality is governed by genetics. So therefore even if you are brought up to know it's wrong, it's who you are and you can't change it. So people would have had to suppress it.
