There's an interesting article in The New York Times about the origins of the population of the British Isles, suggesting they all pretty much come from the same genetic pool.

However the British have a very mixed gene pool (though probably no more mixed than many). Even ignoring the fact that English, Scots, Welsh and Irish have been intermarrying for centuries we've also got a fair sprinkling of Celt, Norman (French Vikings), Germanic, some Italian etc, etc.
