Too much of a good thing?

Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
Is it possible to eat too much fruit and veg? If I ate 20 oranges a day would anything bad happen?

I've given up chocolate for Lent and have a very sweet tooth so am planning to eat a LOT of fruit. I've had 4 tangerines today so far :)

I expect so, but you'd have to eat more than you'd want to I woulda thought :)

plus, tangerines are pretty small, I think you need to eat 2 to get one portion of your "5 a day", so you can eat loads of them :)

    that one's always nasty.

I have heard that grapes are fattening if you eat too many, but I'm not sure how many grapes constitutes "too many".

    /unhelpful.

Too many oranges aren't great for you, but nothing godawful will happen if you eat too many... same with any fruit really.

Too many pears is the worst culprit for dodgy toilet habits :p

Too much fruit can be bad as you can consume too many vitamins which can cause liver problems, but you would have to consume a lot over a long period of time to cause it. The worst outcome for you is getting the squits due to all the extra fibre in your diet.

If you eat more of anything than you burn off then you'll get fat. If you eat too much fruit you'll just get the squits.

You can, in theory, have too many vitamins in your body, but you really need to be taking the vitamins in way beyond what you naturally find in food.

Tangerines, like satsumas, are only quite small and usually 2-3 satsumas qualify as a portion.

    Where did you hear that?

It was in one of my Biology books a couple of years back.

Bananas are a great source of potassium but potassium in high doses can kill you. The minimum amount to kill a human would be 30 bananas in a day.

Have everything in moderation, as they say. :)

the RDA of potassium is 3500mg apparently and there is 450mg in a banana. I'm not sure if 30 bananas would actually kill you though, this webpage suggests not but I won't be testing it out.

Too much vit C definitely can kill.

Wouldn't it be quite difficult to OD on vit C as the body doesn't store it?

The body may not store it but it's still there somewhere. The human body can't store smack but people OD from it. What it can't use would stay in your stomach or bloodstream and remain within the body.

I'm going to have to cut down eating oranges now. :crying:

Vitamin C is water soluable, it gets flushed through when you have too much.

Plus there is still sugar and acid in fruit that can ruin your teeth
