What the hell is up with my hand?

For a while now I've had a hard lump on the joint of my left wrist. Its always tender if you press it but its normally pretty painless, apart from every month or two it gets incredibly tender and painful. It looks exactly like this:

which is a ganglion cyst. I have the exact same symptoms but the doctor said it isn't a ganglion because my lump is made of hard bone. She's given me some ibuprofen gel which she says should take down the swelling a bit, meanwhile I've got my hand held tightly in a bandage to restrict the moment as much as possible
What on earth could this be? Why have I got a lump of bone on my wrist joint and why is it swelling and hurting? I asked my doctor these questions and she didn't seem to know, or care tbh. I've got private healthcare, is it worth getting a specialist to check it out?

Maybe you should contact a specialist, especially if your own GP won't help you...
I had a nasty cyst that took me two years to have diagnosed. Hrmpf. At that point I went to a hand/wrist specialist and got a steroid injection of some sort and it regressed, got it once since and not again. BUT, my point was that it seems to have pushed the bones it squeezed up from. I can visibly feel a slight hole in my wrist that is not on my other.
During my two year search, one suggestion I heard was that the bones I had once broken had shifted or something like that. x-rays removed that doubt though. Have you had x-rays taken??
My symptoms were exactly like you described, as well as decreased mobility. When I was at my worst I could flex my wrist upwards by like 5° before the pain got too much. Down was always a bit easier, not a lot though. At other times it regressed on its own -but always returned eventually until the injection.
I'd recommend seeing a specialist.
