Just wondering... If a university raises money for a charity in a student union bar, legally does VAT have to be taken off what is earned?
Last year the previous E&E officer raised money for the Fairtrade Foundation and the students union took VAT... I am just not sure if this is kosha as I don't trust them.

It depends. If you sell items on behalf of a charity (such as club night tickets) then AFAIK VAT is payable.
