Gmail SMTP Server slow and unreliable

Does anyone else using an email client find Gmail's SMTP Server slow and unreliable?
I find it takes much longer to send an email using Gmail's SMTP server then my ISP's (I guess cos the ISP has a much more direct connection to my PC)
But if I don't send via Gmail, then those outgoing emails are not available to be viewed later online through the gmail website.
A lot of times trying to send out with Gmail just times out
