Rodent Problem

Help! Bought a new wireless mouse for the PC, but it keeps going reeeally slowly - I have to drag it a mile and it goes an inch, and the curser keeps waving around without being moved. It's really getting on my tits now and all I want to do is smash it with a sledgehammer.
eta; it's got brand new duracell batteries in it. And they're the right way round ;)

Any suggestions? ta!!!

Make sure the mouse is on a non-reflective surface (if it's optical)?
Check the control panel mouse options and adjust the speed?

I've just changed the batteries again, and my god, it works. Which means the mouse eats batteries as fast as a real mouse eats cheese.

Ah yes, they tend to do that. How long did they last? Mine last about a month (of course I take the batteries out when I'm not using the computer).
