'Beast of Beslan' is dead

Chechen rebel leader Shamil Basayev - dubbed the Beast of Beslan - has been killed by Russia's security forces.

The radical Islamic leader was behind the Beslan school siege in which hundreds of people, mostly children, were killed.

Basayev, 41, together with other Chechen fighters, was killed in Ingushetia, a region neighbouring Chechnya, in an operation by Russian special forces, Russia said.

I doubt this will make much difference in the long term, but the world certainly smells a little better today.

It was one of the biggest tragedies of modern times for Russia and indeed the world. There is no denying that.

Both sides in the war of independance have been unimaginably cruel, niether side are any better or any moral.

You could certainly argue that Putin has more blood on his hands than this man. But thats hardly to say he wasnt a foul terrorist who used methods even hardliners find over the line.

Nothing's gonna change. He may be dead but someone else will fill his place.
