Eco-Footprint - How environmentally friendly are you?

Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
Following up on the McDonald's thread about the environment, I thought an ecological-footprint thread would be interesting. I'm actually volunteering with a pilot scheme at the moment in Surrey, working alongside small businesses and helping them to run more sustainably. One thng that we have come across in a lot of meetings is the concept of the eco-footprint.

An eco-footprint is an estimate of land and sea area (in hectares) that are needed to provide the water, energy, food, materials and other goods that we consume in our lifestyle. At the moment environmentalists, conservationalists, scientists and other forward thinking folk are trying to encourage people to reduce their eco-foot print. This is because a lot of us are consuming faster and using up resources than the earth can sustain.

Anyway, just out of curiousity... How big is everybody's eco-footprint?

Find Out

There exists 1.8 hectares per person for the earth to be sustainable.

Luckily I can think of 1.7 people I'd rather didn't live on this one.

There is a measurement of sustainable economic growth that i forgot the name of. If i remember correctly most economies are growing sustainably, but at a low rate. I'd quote the text book i had that i read it in but i sold it back to the shop to get pissed.

I think it's alright, although not in depth enough... For example it could ask how long you shower for, or how much you recycle.

It's a rough guide... It is designed to make people think.

But a more in depth one would be interesting as I like to visit the cinema quite a bit.

Though the test doesn't consider many things: such as the use of energy efficient light bulbs or effective boiler, or the fact that my scooter has low emissions.

I agree it needs to take into account other stuff too, Dont have energy efficiency electricty, but do turn lights off at every opportunity and dont leave stuff on standby, always turn stuff off completely (NMM is strict about that) We recycle everything we can, and I used cloth nappies on my son rather than disposables.

Some stuff I kind of had to guess, like fuel consumption I know in mpg, but not l/km, I also don't know how big my house is.

Ok, now now we've establised that we're all not as eco-friendly as we need to be, what are we going to do about it?

I keep telling myself I really ought to turn the TV off properly instead of living it on standby. Apparently this wastes not inconsiderable amounts of energy. Perhaps I will now force myself to start doing it.

    Difficult question isn't it?

Take transport for example. If you live in North Wales the public transport system isn't quite as good as London (I've made that point to a few people giving environment talks), however if you live in North Wales it's likely that produce has travelled less distance to get to the marketthan if you live in central London.

Also, holidays abroad increase your foot print. Recycling is the easiest thing in the world, cut down on meat, try and buy local produce ect.

Take into account check in time and baggage it's probably not that different in the end.

My council do a recycling scheme, I'm going to become slightly more anal retentive about it, and shop in the market too.
