Hm.. file name disappeared

I've just noticed that the filename for my images in " my pictures " under " thumbnail " view has disappeared. Clicking rename makes it appear so it's still their but it's not noticable unless i either preview the image or click rename which shouldnt be the case.
Any idea's how to fix that ?
It was working fine last night when i transferred some ne wpictures i had taken yesterday, it worked when i had switched the pc off in the early hours yet it's not working now so something's not working.
I'm so used to using it with the thumbnail view it's my preference and i cannot use it any other way plus i find it easier for finding an image by name / scanning for it.
