Dream placements at Charlton FC, Gordon Ramsey and Trevor Sorbie to be won
Young people in England are today being urged to apply for exclusive
five-day work placements set up by the Learning and Skills Council (LSC).
To inspire young people to discover their calling in life the LSC has set up
a competition for 16-18 year olds to win once in a lifetime work experience
positions. These include a week at Newcastle Falcons Rugby Club or Charlton
FC, working behind the scenes at Gordon Ramsey, a reporter for Sports Beat
or a week at London's exclusive Trevor Sorbie hair salon.
The LSC has set up the competition to raise awareness of the possibilities
young people have - but only if they achieve at least five good GCSEs or the
vocational equivalent. Each placement is in an industry where a minimum
level of qualifications is essential and highlights the fact that by 2010,
very few jobs will be available for those without these key qualifications.
To apply for one of these placements young people must log on to
www.getsetforlife.org.uk where they can submit a short statement on which
position they would most like to win and why they deserve this once in a
lifetime experience.
The competition has been designed to reach the third of young people who by
19 leave school or college without a minimum set of qualifications - at
least five GCSEs at grades A* to C or the vocational equivalents.
Gordon Ramsey said, "The winner will receive a week of hands-on experience
within several areas departments - a great opportunity for any young person
aspiring to work in hospitality. They will take on a variety of roles,
giving them a valuable insight into this industry.
"We are delighted to be involved with the Learning and Skills Council and we
want to encourage young people to remain in learning and gain a minimum set
of qualifications in order to fulfil their potential."
Peter Varney, Chief Executive of Charlton Athletic Football Company Ltd,
said: "The competition winner will be given a valuable insight in to the day
to day operation of a Premiership football club. We have received valuable
support and funding from the LSC in the past with training programmes and
gaining qualifications for staff. We hope this fantastic opportunity will
encourage young people to focus on the importance of gaining qualifications
in order to succeed in their chosen careers."
THE PLACEMENTS
CHARLTON ATHLETIC FC
Should you win this placement, you will get a truly complete work
experience. Every day will be a new challenge as you'll be given a day in
every department to really see just what it takes to make a winning
premiership football club.
GORDON RAMSEY'S RESTAURANTS
You will be working in not just one, but ALL of the famous chef's
restaurants. You will see all the parts of the business that work together
to serve first class dishes.
As well as spending time in the famous venues, you'll see every aspect
including human resources operations and reservations.
If you're interested in any part of the hospitality this will be an
invaluable experience to learn from one of the true masters.
SPORTSBEAT
If sports journalism has ever tickled your fancy, find out what it's like to
work in a top sports-based news agency.
You'll be involved in the research that goes into creating great sports news
and given the chance to assist the writers themselves to get a real
experience of what it's like being a sports journalist.
It's also possible, being a week before the World Cup, you may be asked to
assist with the World Cup supplement.
TREVOR SORBIE
Have you ever fancied working in a top hair salon? If you are the winner of
this placement you will be spending time at Trevor's exclusive salon in
Covent Garden.
You will get a great insight into both the company and the man himself, and
will find yourself working alongside your buddy who will show you the ropes
in both the styling area and the colour department.
This is a great opportunity for any budding young stylist to experience what
it is like to work in a leading hair salon.

This placement is a fantastic opportunity to experience what it is like to
work for one of England's top rugby clubs.
