Is being a human the same as having Humanity?

Is humanity more then a descripton? Is it an ideal? Is it a way to live? Or is it just what we are no matter how we act?

Having a sense of family, community, empathy, sharing with others, breathing, knowing that life is fragile and should be lived to the max.

Knowing that, no matter how shite life gets, at least I don't have to wake up and live with the fact I support Tottenham Hotspur.

Humanity is just an other word for human race... you are a human when you have the body/dna of a human...

    Breathing is fairly inclusive.

Yes breathing... But animals and plants breath too.

As for the other characteristics, if they were seen as what defines a human then you may as well exclude people with mental retardation, autistic spectrum disorders, mental illness, people in comas, the brain damaged ect

Plants don't breathe, and we're not defining what is a human but what is humanity - what sets humans apart from other life, really.

Humanity is a group of humans. You cannot define a flock of birds without first knowing what a bird is.

What is a human? I would say that it is strictly down to DNA. To impose for example that humans are empathetic, feel a sense of community, family and share things is too equivocal. How can you measure all of these? How can you say this is universal when cultures are so diverse?

    I think therefore I am
Is it conscious thought that sets us apart? Rather than an instinctive reaction.

I think therefore I am is a flawed statement.

You can only claim "I think therefore there are thoughts."

But there has to be something to think the thoughts, they can't exist on their own, hence 'I am'.

"Cogito ergo sum"/"I think therefor I am" was about whether or not one exists, not whether they're human.

Mmmyeah but I was trying to think about what sets us apart from other animals, as in, do animals philosophise like this?

Humanity is a group of humans.
So a single human being cannot demonstrate humanity?

I take the point, but surely something like humanity is equivocal by definition. It depends on the individual and their interaction with the wider world.

You say they cannot exist on their own. This is not true, they quite well could. You are claiming "I" of an unkown quantity. They may only be one being in existence, having al the thoughts that exist at once. It is not "I", as it is not exclusivley "you". Indeed, there doesn't even need to be a being.

Who are you to claim thoughts cannot exist independantly? Even sicentists do not know this - we don't know what thoughts are, let alone wether they even exist at all. None-one has to be thinking. It can just be the very process of thought alone.

Think about it for a while. Is a thinker needed?
