Alabama by Neil Young
Anothe Kind of Green by John Mayer
Which Way Do We Run by Gov't Mule
Decoration Day by The Drive by Truckers
Lost in the Flood by Bruce Springsteen. In fact, most Bruce Springsteen songs have great lyrics.
Collapse the Light Into Earth by Porcupine Tree
Alabama's lyrics are my current favourite though. And the Black Crowes cover is the best version.:
Oh Alabama
The devil fools with the best laid plan.
Swing low Alabama
You got spare change
You got to feel strange
And now the moment is all that it meant.
Alabama, you got the weight on your shoulders
That’s breaking your back.
Your cadillac has got a wheel in the ditch
And a wheel on the track
Oh Alabama
Banjos playing through the broken glass
Windows down in Alabama.
See the old folks tied in white ropes
Hear the banjo.
Don’t it take you down home?
Alabama, you got the weight on your shoulders
That’s breaking your back.
Your cadillac has got a wheel in the ditch
And a wheel on the track
Oh Alabama.
Can I see you and shake your hand.
Make friends down in Alabama.
I’m from a new land
I come to you and see all this ruin
What are you doing Alabama?
You got the rest of the union to help you along
What’s going wrong?
How Soon is Now is 2nd and There is a light is 27th
Fucking Travesty!
Them polls are a load of shite anyway.
99 Red balloons
But anyway rant over, my favourites:
"When I am king, you will be first against the wall" Paranoid Android by Radiohead.
The whole of Frankly Mister Shankly by The Smiths.
"You scumbag, you maggot, you cheap lousy ******, happy christmas your arse." Fairytale of New York by the Pogues
"I don't know where the sunbeams end and the starlights begin, it's all a mystery" Fight Test by The Flaming Lips
We sailed away on a winter's day
with fate as malleable as clay;
but ships are fallible, I say,
and the nautical, like all things, fades
"Asleep in the sand with the ocean washing over..."
Van Morrison - Sweet Thing:
"And I will stroll the merry way
And jump the hedges first
And I will drink the clear
Clean water for to quench my thirst
And I shall watch the ferry-boats
And they’ll get high
On a bluer ocean
Against tomorrow’s sky"

There are loads of heavy metal lyrics that most people don't get because they fail to see the inherent irony in it. Heavy metal doesn't take itself nearly as seriously as people think.
Turbonegro have some fantastic lyrics. As does Captain Beefheart but then again, he's not really heavy metal at all.
Cannibal Corpse - I cum blood & Addicted to vaginal skin
Those type of lyrics are as contrived and cliched as any happy hardcore dance or pop song.
My favourite lyrics is "I would go out tonight, but I haven't got a stitch to wear" or "I'm so sick and tired, I'm feeling very sick and ill today, but I'm still fond of you" Both Smiths lyrics.
"I wasn't born so much as I fell out" from Lost in the Supermarket by The Clash has always stuck with me, I'm not sure why.
But yeah, with regard to that list... I also couldn't believe there's only one Dylan track, forshame. His music is lyrical nirvana for me...
"Take me disappearing through the smoke rings of my mind,
Down the foggy ruins of time, far past the frozen leaves,
The haunted, frightened trees, out to the windy beach,
Far from the twisted reach of crazy sorrow.
Yes, to dance beneath the diamond sky with one hand waving free,
Silhouetted by the sea, circled by the circus sands,
With all memory and fate driven deep beneath the waves,
Let me forget about today until tomorrow.."
"Inside the museums, Infinity goes up on trial
Voices echo this is what salvation must be like after a while..
But Mona Lisa musta had the highway blues
You can tell by the way she smiles.
See the primitive wallflower freeze
When the jelly-faced women all sneeze
Hear the one with the moustache say, "Jeeze
I can't find my knees"
Oh, jewels and binoculars hang from the head of the mule
But these visions of Johanna, they make it all seem so cruel"
"The woman that I love she got a hook in her nose
her eyebrows meet, she wears second hand clothes
She speaks with a stutter and she walks with a hop
I don't know why I love her but I just can't stop.."
Then there's Tom Waits:
"Now I'm smoking cigarettes and I strive for purity,
And I slip just like the stars into obscurity.
'Cause every time I hear that melody, well, puts me up a tree,
And the grapefruit moon, one star shining, is all that I can see..."
"Well the room is crowded, people everywhere
And I wonder, should I offer you a chair?
Well if you sit down with this old clown, take that frown and break it,
Before the evening's gone away, I think that we could make it,
And I hope that I don't fall in love with you...
Well the night does funny things inside a man
These old tom-cat feelings you don't understand,
Well I turn around to look at you, you light a cigarette,
I wish I had the guts to bum one, but we've never met,
And I hope that I don't fall in love with you...."
For me, the beauty of Springsteen is the way he makes me feel as if I'm in such a specific time and place (that I've no experience of), feeling such powerful things. More often than not on an open road, which is very appealing.
"You can hide 'neath your covers,
And study your pain..
Make crosses from your lovers
Throw roses in the rain
Waste your summer praying in vain
For a saviour to rise from these streets
Well now I’m no hero
That’s understood
All the redemption I can offer, girl
Is beneath this dirty hood
With a chance to make it good somehow
Hey what else can we do now?"
The entirity of Born to Run is atmospheric, lyrical perfection.
He pulls a prayer book out of his sleeping bag
Preacher lights up a butt and takes a drag
Waitin' for when the last shall be first and the first shall be last
In a cardboard box 'neath the underpass
Got a one-way ticket to the promised land
You got a hole in your belly and gun in your hand
Sleeping on a pillow of solid rock
Bathin' in the city aqueduct..
I've always loved "I got this guitar and I learned how to make it talk"... Indeed.
Lost in the Flood
Eighth Avenue sailors in satin shirts whisper in the air
Some storefront incarnation of Maria, she's puttin' on me the stare
And Bronx's best apostle stands with his hand on his own hardware
Everything stops, you hear five quick shots, the cops come up for air
And now the whiz-bang gang from uptown, they're shootin' up the street
And that cat from the Bronx starts lettin' loose, but he gets blown right off his feet
And some kid comes blastin' 'round the corner, but a cop puts him right away
He lays on the street holding his leg, screaming something in Spanish, still breathing when I walked away
And somebody said, "Hey man, did you see that? His body hit the street with such a beautiful thud"
I wonder what the dude was sayin', or was he just lost in the flood?
Hey man, did you see that, those poor cats are sure fucked up
I wonder what they were gettin' into, or were they just lost in the flood?
Youngstown
Well my daddy worked the furnaces
Kept ’em hotter than hell
I come home from ’Nam worked my way to scarfer
A job that’d suit the devil as well
Taconite coke and limestone
Fed my children and make my pay
Them smokestacks reachin’ like the arms of God
Into a beautiful sky of soot and clay
Jungleland
The midnight gang’s assembled
And picked a rendezvous for the night
They’ll meet ’neath that giant Exxon sign
That brings this fair city light
Man there’s an opera out on the Turnpike
There’s a ballet being fought out in the alley
More Neil:
"I am just a dreamer, but you are just a dream,
You could have been anyone to me.
Before that moment you touched my lips
That perfect feeling when time just slips
Away between us on our foggy trip."
Cortez the Killer has one of the best lyrics ever:
"He came dancing across the water, Cortez, Cortez. What a killer."
I love the lyrics to Pocahontas, especially...
"Aurora borealis
The icy sky at night
Paddles cut the water
In a long and hurried flight
From the white man
to the fields of green
And the homeland
we've never seen.."
I dig Brando's appearance at the end, too.
Can't believe I forgot my favourite Joni song, Cactus Tree, which has some of my favourite lyrics ever:
"There's a man who's been out sailing
In a decade full of dreams
And he takes her to a schooner
And he treats her like a queen
Bearing beads from California
With their amber stones and green
He has called her from the harbor
He has kissed her with his freedom
He has heard her off to starboard
In the breaking and the breathing
Of the water weeds
While she was busy being free
There's a man who's climbed a mountain
And he's calling out her name
And he hopes her heart can hear three thousand miles
He calls again
He can think her there beside him
He can miss her just the same
He has missed her in the forest
While he showed her all the flowers
And the branches sang the chorus
As he climbed the scaley towers
Of a forest tree
While she was somewhere being free" etc
