Royal Navy and homosexuality

What barmy piece of thinking am I complaining about today? This - the BBC informs us: "The Royal Navy may introduce 'drama-based training' to modernise staff attitudes towards homosexuality, the service's head of personnel says. Vice Admiral Adrian Johns told a gay workplace conference that some navy employees 'need to be brought into line with 21st century thinking.'. He added navy staff could be allowed on the EuroPride march in London in July.:: Details ::

Cue the jokes about them getting it up the naval...

Seriously, isn't this nonsense? Are we seriously expected to believe that the Royal Navy is staffed by nothing but homophobes who think gays should be castrated or something? Stonewall, the group that challenged the ban on homosexuals being allowed in the navy won their court battle back in 2000. They now rate the Royal Navy 75th in its list of "gay-friendly employers", whatever that means. More time-wasting rubbish...

What do you think of the drama-based training to be introduced?
Beep boop. I'm a bot.

Seeing as bullying is rife in the armed forces, I think its a good idea.

But seriously, I would imagine that there is a far bigger problem of homophobic bullying in the army than in the Navy- NQA and others with military background could perhaps confirm?

There is a lot of bullying in any armed services regardless of sexuality. In my opinion, some of the sexuality jibes can be due to the old school playground jokes - calling weak kids, kids who can't fight, poofs, pussies..******s and so on. A fair few people will have grown up thinking that most homosexuals are weak and feeble. Who in the military would want someone watching their back - who is deemd as weak, cowardly and girly? If you're going into battle, you don't really want someone watching your back who is very feminine, who'll be scared easily as opposed to the macho egotistical pricks who make up most of the Armed Forces.

Obviously that's just one idea. I'm sure that if a few homosexual fellas joined the Navy, who were built like tanks, there'd be no problems there.

Anyway - I think the Navy will be the most homophobic as they're away at Sea with no signs of women for extended periods of time. Obviously not every member of the Navy is homophobic, if any, but I still think it's a good idea to just emphasise that homosexuals are 'real' soldiers too and probably have more taste than to want to get it on with said macho twunt.

I lost the plot somewhere after the first paragraph by the way.

Kinda reminds me of an old episode of The Simpsons, in which the captain is taking some sailors out to sea. Krusty the Klown hands him a load of used pornographic magazines before they set sail, to which he responds "yarr, these will stop my men from resorting to homosexuality. For about five minutes". *sailors start laughing hysterically*

    Absolute bullshit.

I wonder what this "drama-based" training exactly entails because it sounds utterly ridiculous.

As if this is going to change anyone's ways.

God I hate the term employee when used about service people - it makes us sound like the 9-5 wasters I've found make up the civilian population.

Drama based sounds like they make them sit through a training video and then to make sure the people at the back are awake the officer tries to hold a discussion about it afterwards. They used to be fun...

"You are having a shower and drop the soap; you bend over to pick it up and suddenly feel the penis of the gentleman in the showers with you, enter your anus. Do you:
A)Take it with glee - and expect a reach around in return.
B)Take it and expect to return the gesture..after all it's not gay to give!
C)Stab the fucker in the stomache with that knife you've hidden under your foreskin"
