Boybands - What's The Verdict?

Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
edited January 2023 in General Chat

Everyone knows plastic pop's gone into overdrive.

Boybands are being produced all the time and very few ever make an impact.

So what do you think?

Do you hate them or love them?

i personally totally hate them, i mean they dont actually do anythin. they sing a song in a studio that someone esle wrote, and then some guy puts all the effects thru it to make it sound good, and then the boyband sits on a stage on a stool and mimes it on countless pre - teen tv shows. or they do an impossible lookin dance routine that there is no way they could do if they were singin at the same time. they dont play their own instruments (altho rare it has been known.), and then there is papa roach who i see as a metal boyband who are just jumping on the nu metal bandwagon. the same goes for crazy town. linkin park are as guilty, but i'd disagree to a certain extent coz i think they do have a little somethin different in their music. and as for bands like hearsay, OMG!!! talk about manufactured!! baked beans couldnt be more manufactured than hearsay!!!! and its not as if they are going to be remembered in a few years time, i mean come on its not like as if bands like upside down and east 17 are still bein played on young teens cd players these days, unlike bands like nirvana, oasis, and the beatles who will probably still b played in 100 years time (as long as the music buying public stays reasonably sane). im sorry if anyon ehas been offended by what ive said but its pretty much all fact not opinion. there has been some reasonable pop around on some occasions, but im not at all a plastic pop fan so it wouldnt be my ideal musical choice anyway

sorry just to add, theres another thing that i really hate about the pop scene at the mo. it doesnt depend on how good a song is, its more to do with how many times it is played on countless commercial radiostations and how many pointless adverts there are on tv. its basically more to do with promotion than quality. remember rock dj by robbie? it was a shit song!!! remember all the hype over the video for it?? thats the reason it sold so well, plus the posters of him that made him look liek soem fuckin freak from a horror film. the sales for rock dj were probably more to do with who bought teh song coz it had a cool video / cool front cover / they liked his hair / they wanted to shock their parents with the pics on it/ etc etc. i dont know a single person who bought it coz it was a quality song. and take limp bizkits recent success. theyre new album sucks compared to significant other, and rollin was bollox, but it sold well coz of airplay, adverts, the video, and the fact that it was the theme for a wrestler. nothin to do with how good the song was. this theory type thing can also be echoed with the teletubbies/ bob the builder/ flat erics chart success. sorry im driftin a bit here, but with bob the builder it actually IS plastic pop, lol <IMG alt="image" SRC="http://www.thesite.org/ubb/biggrin.gif">.
i just hate that its saw by record company fatcats as more of an advertisement buisiness as opposed to a buisness where u write your own songs, play your own gigs, and are not told how to look/act/talk etc etc

just wanted to get that off my chest!!

    Very true <IMG alt="image" SRC="http://www.thesite.org/ubb/smile.gif"&gt;

As far as Hear'Say go though, I'm not a fan. But it's about TALENT. If they CAN sing well, which is what they're there for, then I don't think it matters how manufactured they are.

But with the exception of Kym and Danny who are quite impressive, they can't sing. Not exactly a future Ella Fitzgerald or Frank Sinatra among them, is there?

    Grrr...

yeh, they can sing, but they stil choose not to sing live. and they didnt write their own song(s). i suppose u could argue that their job is to be a singer, not a songwriter, but its like an artist asking his mate to design a picture for him so he can paint it. it just doesnt have the same effect does it?

    Here's a better one GFM:

99% of everything on PopFest MTV = Shit.

When it's being shown on there, you know it's being bought by five year-olds.

Bandwagon five year-olds, I might add.

I too hate manufactured groups. It really annoys me when they are called 'bands' i mean bands actually play instruments, how many boybands do that? Think the answer is none although i've heard a rumour that one of A1 can play the piano lol These chart hogging groups of crap are preventing real bands and singers with talent from being recognised. Do any of u listen to Lamaque (duno how to spell his name) live on radio 1 ? cos he plays decent music.

I think crap pop makes the nation less intelligent. 90% of Steps fans will say that Steps are actually good. But then again most of them are still in Primary School and haven't started the 'persuasive and factual argument' part of English yet. Or hit puberty.

I'm getting a headache. Give me a guitar.

    Exactly, it's about TALENT!!

Any old idiot can strum a guitar, but that doesn't mean they're talented. Little puppets.

It's about writing and playing good songs.

Turtle...guitars soothe me for some reason. Acoustic, that is. I didn't mean full volume Muse....

There's a lot wrong with it if you have a headache. I only seem to listen to Muse these days when I talk to Turtle, which is strange. I'm screaming to Alanis Morisette at the moment.
