One difference Kermit is that cocaine users are harming no one. Speeding drivers can and very often do harm others.

And the cocaine just magics itself to your nose does it, there is no problems in its production, transport and selling?

That applies to countless products, both illegal and legal, that all of us consume every day.

I dont think so, certainly some products have a nasty supply chain, but to compare them to what cocaine does to the people and enviroment of South America is over the top.

There are hundreds of thousands of Colombians who would disagree.
Fact is every community where there are drug problems can easily identify dozens of crack and heroine dealers- dealers who very often ply their trade at the very same spot night after night after night.

In my experience the police do go for those people, within reason. You need proof, and good dealers won't allow them to get it. There is also the desire to get the big guns, and of course there is some corruption.
Why is the police more interested in bothering kids who've taken a pill at a club or a bloke who's having a couple of lines at the weekend?

I don't think they do, not to the extent of prosecution.

The cynic says they confiscate stuff because they can, and because they want to. It's amazing how many drugs goe walkies from police stations.
Commissioner Brian Paddick ensured his men and women focused in the real priorities and didn't waste any time with folk sitting on a bench having a smoke... and guess what? While he was in charge things went dramatically better in Brixton... until the fucking Daily HateMail hounded him out that is.

Paddick had the right idea to drugs policing.

He is also still a very senior police officer. He was making some very interesting comments about policing at the end of last week.

"Victor Meldrew Syndrome" stigamtises young people.

He's completely right too. They should promote him to the top job IMHO, and jail Blair for conspiracy to murder.

    And that's exactly it.

He says he goes after the proper crims, the robbers and muggers, not someone smoking the botanical equaivalent of a JD and coke. That's how it should be.

And someone who gets the old fogeys to shut up is a good copper. Always moaning about fat kids, and then slap ASBOs and curfews on any teen who dares to have some fun. They need to be told to shut up.

Did you see the Panorama about ASBO's, truely frightening, interim ASBO's given without any warning or chance to defend yourself. ASBO's given to kids with IQ's of 64, and virtually half of them being broken.

ASBOs are there as a way of jailing people the police don't like without actually having to go through any due process. ASBOs are deliberately set up to be broken, so the police can simply prove troublemakers have broken the ASBO, rather than actually committed a crime.

It imposes criminal liabilities on a civil order, and ASBOs are very sneaky. There isn't the same opportunity to defend yourself because all the police need to show is that people don't like you- they don't even need to show a propensity for criminal behaviour.

Lots of things stink these days. Get convicted of affray twice and you can get sent to prison for life- and people wonder why the prisons are overflowing.

We seem to be cementing the position of the lower class more and more, and ASBO's are a good way of doing it.

On the Panorama they showed sections of the Estate where the kids were living, its no bloody wonder they are angry and like getting drunk, it seems the only reasonable response to their enviroment.
