I work in Central London where, like most major cities, there is far too much homelessness, poverty, suffering and unhappiness. This makes me especially nauseas considering that we have the means to put men on the moon, transplant ears onto mice, leave thousands of office blocks uninhabited and construct the biggest Ferris wheel in the world so we that we can simply have a good view of the City etc. This in mind, i'm often contemplating ideas which could help solve the problem, even a little effort could be a great help to someone.
While walking along the Thames today it was very apparent how many delivery couriers got about on bicycles. Now, I have an old mountain bike that I bought some years ago with the intention of getting fit and seeing the countryside. I'm sure that like a lot of you, my bike has been in the garage for some years gathering dust and rust before I'd no doubt throw it out.
So i think, could I give this bike to somebody who could make good use of it? I suppose that they could simply sell it OR...Maybe they could start couriering themselves and start to earn a little cash? How easy is couriering to get into? Maybe then, slowly but surely, they could get enough cash together to start to get their lives together? You wouldn't need any particular skill, except to know your way around town and obviously be able to ride a bike.
Then I start to wonder how many old mountain bikes are rotting away in sheds, bought by rmiddle class suburban folk and forgotten about and whether they could be put to good use?
I'm serious and I'm going to contact Shelter or someone similar to get a reality check on this idea as i'm full of good intention but do need a little practical, objective advice so I thought i'd see what you lot thought.
Objective criticism, advice, encouragement or any comments please? Come to think of it any other ideas?
