Animal Welfare Bill measures published

Well, here's some good news with, I regret to say, some bad news.

The good news first. According to the BBC, "New measures to protect animals against abuse and to make owners legally liable for their pets' welfare in England and Wales have been published. The Animal Welfare Bill, the first overhaul of pet law in 94 years, includes harsher fines of up to £20,000 and maximum jail terms of 51 weeks." Click here for story.

This is excellent news. Currently as the law stands, there has to be proof that an animal is under threat before the RSPCA, for example, could take legal action against the owner. Just one problem - by the time they have the evidence, the animal in question could be dead. Animals have the right to some standard of living. Britain likes to think of itself as a nation of animal lovers, does it not?

But it's not all good news. Consider this. Whilst it's commendable the Government have announced this, their motives can be put under question. Not for the first time, sadly. These plans were announced this afternoon. Isn't it slightly convenient that The Sun, (the biggest selling newspaper in the country, and the government's main propaganda machine) on Thursday morning, put a story about animal abuse on its front page?

A case of the government being shamed into action again? One wonders. And of course, let's not forget our dear leader's botched attempts to ban fox hunting. Less to do with giving a damn with foxes, more to do with Blair trying to save his own bacon from left-wing MPs who were angry with him over the Iraq war, a shadow which will linger over him forever.

This also leads, yet again, to more awkward questions about Rupert Murdoch's strangehold on this government. The man whom must be consulted before European policy can be changed, it emerged recently. For months, the government drags its feet, does nothing as per usual. Suddenly, Murdoch's best selling daily puts the story on its front page, bringing it to the attention of millions once more. Within just over 24 hours, the Government proudly announces its plans. Is this all coincidence?

Government by gimmick, policy by the tabloid newspaper headline... it's all come back again. Does New Labour never learn?
Beep boop. I'm a bot.
