I think it's a problem of financing. Nationalised public services can and do work incredibly well elsewhere (namely Continental Europe). So why not here? Well... mostly because they have been starved of money for decades on end, not only by Tories but by Labour governments as well

The fact that they consistently fail to deliver is just one reason why some of us have a -
    a surreal aversion towards taxes

And it's good one, the violent use that the cash is also put to aside.

The resources are there, but the political will isn't. Moving the whole thing into the "private" sector (in this case another set of unnaccountable fictions) is just those at the top washing their hands of one more fuck up in a long line of uselessness.

I'll be fucked if they get one red cent off me until they show they can run more than a bath. Don't forget these are the people, who if setting up a company to remove garbage from houses will buy a suite of offices for millions before bin wagons.
After many decades of under-investment the amount needed to put things right would be enormous

But it doesn't have to be overnight. Another problem of having those who can't hack it in the real world in charge of shit like this is that they think in terms of months and years, not decades. Being human weather vanes as well as magpies, they switch the focus of what their aims are at a whim, in response to the news, to the latest fad from some far right/left think tank or to channel funds into fighting terrorism or whatever this weeks bogeyman is.

To fix something as big as a national rail network, with all the associated issues would take vision, drive, purpose and overall control in the hands of those at the bottom who know what the fuck is actually going on.

Government is the opposite of all these things. So is big business, which is why they both fail, because government is run by and for big business interests, and is therefore indistinguishable from it. Only small decentralised operations are effective at meeting needs "on the ground" which is why both government and big business strive to stamp them out as soon as possible.

    Vertical command structure - useless.

    Horizontal command structure - works.

Neither big government of big business can survive a genuine conpetition with small business or small government functions and they know it, hence the grasp for ever more control.

    Sorry for going on.
