ditch all GCSEs apart from maths, english, science (make all 3 sciences worth 2 grades), foreign langauge and 2 other subjects of the students choice, and teach it in a college environment where the responsibility is of the student to learn.

we think theres too much specialisation at GCSE level, and so it needs to be cut to core subjects and some others - and include tradesmen type training skills as option as well, but at the recognised level of examination

and scrap all under 14 national standardised exams so emphisis can be focused on teaching subjects, not exams

At my secondary school we *had* to take english lang, english lit, maths, double award science, a foreign language, a D&T subject, and 3 subjects of our choice anyway, so how would anything be different?

Make all three science subjects worth 2 grades. What do you mean by this? No triple science, just double science? Or each seperate science subject worth 2 grades?

what im saying is cut number of formal exams taken down to core subjects and 2 others

english, maths, double science, another language being core with the extra subjects being whatever school is 'specilised' in despite the fact how little depth is covered so cant really be specialised

Erm, is this not what already happens?

You know, when you have an idea, you don't need to post it on thesite, especially if there's nothing new or interesting about it. :thumb:

erm no foreign languages are optional

    so is double science

my arguments main point though is that other than core subject grades, not mant others are important since they are measured by their own groups in the way they feel best ie music acting etc

there seems to me to be less and less point.

where are all the high grade jobs for this mass of uni goers going to come from?

what we need is a feww million kids leaving school who know how to use a sewing machine ...for thirty bob a week.

Question and answer all in one.

    Babysitting+brainwashing.

    You need -

reading, writing, mathematics + thinking skills and a library.

    you get -

7 years too fucking long, pissing about, removal of thinking skills and a pointlessly prolonged childhood.

Not in my school they weren't.

At GCSE, we had to take. Double Science, maths, english lit and lang. One Art, One Humanity, One Foreign Language, One Technology, and One Other.

    Hardly specialisation.

No your wrong. Everyone takes a foreign language and a CDT. Science must be taken and for most people thats double award. Some people do seperate science.

Anyway I think we should call your idea the National Cirriculum. Do you like the sound of that name? Sounds new and refreshing!

People have to take Modern Foreign Languages as part of their high school cirriculum. There are more exams than simply GCSE's. Just because people have the option of a GCSE in a MFL doesn't mean they have the option of taking a MFL altogether.

Same as religious studies has to be taken but not nesscearily a GCSE.

Am I the only person here who didn't have to take a foreign language at GCSE? We had to take the following:
    Maths
English - anyone who was predicted a C and above had to take lit as well as language. (I started Lit but dropped it as it was after school and I was doing other stuff)
    Science double award
    Humanities/Religious Studies

Look. This is from the DoES' own website. I quote,

"MFL is no longer a statutory subject at Key Stage 4."

You have the option to do them, sure. They're just not compulsory. My son isn't doing one in any shape or form.

They might have been when you were at school, same as they were when I was, but they're not now.

Make english lang, english lit, maths, science, french OR german, history, geography, one tech and one art subject all compulsory. On top of that, put together a *strictly* non-political course together that teaches kids the mechanics of government and the legal system and make that compulsory. Add a component to english language for handwriting.

If a kid isn't academically minded and wants to go on to do an apprenticeship instead of college, they have to get A-C in english, maths and science to get accepted. And I have absolutely no problem extending the school day at secondary school to 9-5. That'll allow more time for things like PE to be squeezed into the timetable.
