It is also most interesting to compare reactions from US officials to looting incidents in Iraq against looting incidents in New Orleans:

No I think what is meant is that it promotes a "me first" attitude whereas in times like this a "society first" approach would be better...

But when society breaks down (however temporarily) I don't think the US is worse than more socialist societies. Unfortunately when law and order go there's always a lot of people willing to take advanatage of this

    Cracking quote in there...

""Negro poverty is not white poverty," explained President Lyndon Johnson in a speech to Howard University in 1965. "Many of its causes and many of its cures are the same. But there are differences - deep, corrosive, obstinate differences, radiating painful roots into the community and into the family and the nature of the individual. These differences are not racial differences. They are solely and simply the consequence of ancient brutality, past injustice and present prejudice. They are anguishing to observe. For the negro they are a constant reminder of oppression."

40 years on and little changes, does it? Other than the apparent blindness towards what Johnson could see so clearly... I can't imagine for one minute that the incumbent even has the mental capacity to see things from anyone else's perspecive like LBJ does in that one comment...

but the idea of self reliance is very different from a "me first" attitude. the former is a positive character trait that has made many a culture strong, the latter is a product of greed and consumerism.
