Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
I wanna train as a mature student to be a widwife. I've always wanted to be one but cos i had some health problems at school i didn't get the grades and went on to do something else.

Anyway the point is i don't know where to look for help on the matter.

Anyone got any ideas?

Don't you even know what a widwife is? It's a new government benefit for men who are widowed-the "widwife" visits all the men and cooks/cleans/shags them all like a substitute wife. You have to go on a special course to become one though as only *special* people can become widwifes.

Maybe you should consider an Access course through your college. I want to get into social work as a mature student - I have loads of practical experience but the academic stuff is really handy, too. There are loads of nursing courses at Uni and the funding for mature nurses is supposed to be ok. ish. I think the route is usually throug something like Project 2000 where you can get a degree if you want and/or specialise. Maybe you could give your nearest maternity ward a ring to see if someone there could help out?

As for a real response............My friend is doing a-levels and applied to do midwifery as a degree but was told theres no point as she didn't have the grades-your position im assuming right????? You can however apply to do a diploma which takes 2 years and then you can do a 1 year course on top of that to get the degree.

Hope that helps, contact me if you need any other info, i'll ask her... ok??

Think very carefully before working for the NHS, understaffed and underpaid are cliche but very true. Ideally you are training for a great job but once you get there all sorts of rubbish takes over. The maternity dept I have just left in disgust is short of staff but has just made everyone reapply for their jobs! why? to save money-just get in another 50 nurses from abroad, give them accomodation and pay them less-a real morale booster. Opps sorry gone on a bit. Good luck anyway
