Drug testing at work

SystemSystem Posts: 8,649 Staff Team
Is drug testing in the workplace a violation of your civil liberties? Or is it fair enough?

Some of the arguments are here: http://ned.thesite.org.uk/drugs/opinions/look_out_for_the_bladder_police.html

What's your opinion?

Lets hope they don't start doing it at Justin's workplace, or he'll get sacked <IMG alt="image" SRC="http://www.thesite.org/ubb/biggrin.gif">

I think it's wrong though, just randomly testing people. If it was someone who was obviously mashed every day, then that would be a bit different, but still wrong.

    lol, you'd be right there... <IMG alt="image" SRC="http://www.thesite.org/ubb/biggrin.gif">

Thing is tho, it should only come to light if the person has an inability to preform his/her job to a satisfactory level... Everyone at my place knows I go out on Thursday night so they all know I feel like shite on Friday...

I was looking for somthing else but found this and thought that justin or whoever, might like to know how to pass a piss test.

all you do is when you think you may be tested carry a pill bottle with the cotton wool in the bottom, now soak the cotton wool with bleach so it is damp to the touch.
take your test but before you hand it back dip your finger into bleach then into piss.
this will neutralise any unwanted chemicals.

I also belive that testing for anything you might have taking is an invasion of personal libertys, with very few exceptions.

It's not that we go to work pissedup or high it's just that some drugs remain in you sytem for ages.

Hash - up to a month in blood and piss, 6 months in hair
Pills - 4 days in blood and piss
Coke -1 day in blood and piss
Thats all I can remember but some things remain in you piss for ages and from the tests you can't tell how long ago the drugs were taken or how much. Therefore someone could be fired from a drug from passively smoking dope because the employer wouldn't be able to tel wether it was passive smoking or deliberate.

If you want to know what the tests can show, here's some better information: http://www.thesite.org/drugs/opinions/how_drug_tests_work.html

I think it is totally wrong to test for drugs at work except in rare circumstances. I think it is acceptable for people who's jobs require a great deal of alertness and lack of it could cause harm to others. Air traffic controllers spring to mind, for example.

Otherwise, I think that employers only have the right to dictate what an employee does at work. If an employee isn't doing his job properly, it shouldn't matter why, and if the employee does perform well, it's not the company's right to dictate what we do outside of work.

As for what how long drugs can be detected, I wouldn't trust the times given. I know that cocaine is supposed to be out of your system in 1 or 2 days, but I was tested when I went for addiction treatment and they found high levels in my system. I hadn't used in 7 days, so I guess it must vary from person to person. Either that or tests are getting much more sensitive.

I got fired from McDonalds for being stoned once. My manager found out and fired me. I will always be grateful to him.

I don't agree with drug testing at work. But if you're wrecked in work (like me) than it's going to affect your work and if you get fires (like me) you cant really argue (not like me).

Sorry looks like I disagree with nearly all of you, but then I employ people.

Put simply, if you are not performing at work and I suspect that it is drug related then I will want to test you. This should be written into your contract so that you know what will happen. I believe that you should have the right to refuse to undergo the test but that you will lose you job as a result.

Basically, I'm not employing you to be stoned, I am liable for any injury which you suffer or (more importantly) which you cause. If your abilities are impaired as a result of drug abuse (and I include alcohol) then you are a danger to yourself and your colleagues. Legally, I am responsible for their safety.

You can preach civil liberties to me if you like, but other people's liberties are important too. Besides, as I said, I would not force you to take the test.

I've been blatantly caught at work by my manager having a chuff, but there were no repurcussions. Why?? The job I was doing at the time was so menial and dull he obviously thought I could do it just as well anyway. When I applied for my current job there was a standard medical that I failed the first time but got waved through on the second despite being no "cleaner". Again, I can only presume that no-one really cared enough to stop me being employed.

I think in general drugs testing at work is an invasion of privacy, if your employer has reasonable grounds for testing you (say if he found you gurning and drooling over your keyboard on a Monday morning) then perhaps it's warranted, but the onus should be on the employer to prove that you are unsuitable to do the job after you've signed the contract.

Testing at work is a hard one.. It has been rumoured to be coming into my work soonish.

What pisses me off is that drugs are still thought to be "taboo" which is bad really.

If I go out on a saturday night and have a pill or some coke, there might be traces in my system monday, but that doesn't mean to say that I'm wasted or can't do my job.

Before any drug testing comes in, I'm pretty sure the company would have to discuss the consequences with you.

A few people at my work know about my "drug taking", including a couple of managers, and I'll be only too happy to discuss with them what might happen to me.

It is a bit of a fucker tho when you consider how many people go out on a thursday night and get pissed up. The next morning I'd say they were unfit for work.

It seems its okay to tell everyone you have a hangover, but if you go into work with the sniffles and tell everyone you had a shit load of coke the night before and you feel a bit bunged up its not construed the same <IMG alt="image" SRC="http://www.thesite.org/ubb/smile.gif">

    heh

    Just my 50p worth <IMG alt="image" SRC="http://www.thesite.org/ubb/smile.gif">

    regards

er drugs are still taboo coz theyre illegal. imho.

but i agree with you about how its unfair to test on a monday if you are still fit to do your job, but have traces in your system. as for thursdays... people should just go out weekends, even if it IS cheaper on thursdays. or like, not get wasted <IMG alt="image" SRC="http://www.thesite.org/ubb/tongue.gif">

GFM - Yeah, they are illegal but plenty people do them heh I don't think they should be taboo these days.

And yeah, I don't go out during the week, mainly because I know I won't get up for work the next day.. (I'm getting old lol) but I know people who get wasted (drunk) on a thursday night and look like shit the next day. But to everyone else its funny that they have a hangover. They aren't fit for their jobs in that state.

If testing comes in, I intend to speak with some of the managers/directors anyway to see what the consequences are. Like I said before atleast 2 of them know I take anyway.

Atleast I don't smoke weed, which stays in the system for how long? a month? 2 months? Plenty people at our place getting caught for that then <IMG alt="image" SRC="http://www.thesite.org/ubb/smile.gif">
