Endo appointment - Any experinces with the Mirena coil?

Hello...

Went to see my endo specialist for the first time today and I've been booked in for a laparoscopy, colonoscopy and hysteroscopy on the 19th May! I've got to go in the day before for the colonoscopy prep (anyone had this before so they can tell me how unplesant it really is - thankfully I will be asleep for the actual thing but not looking forward to preparing for it :( )
Yeah so that news really isn't sinking in yet... I hope it does soon or I'm not going to feel prepared! I know laps are no biggy but I've never had one before so I'm a bit scared of the unknown (bit stupid after having had a laparotomy cos looks like it's a doddle compared but anyway).

Also been told to get a prescription for volterol - was wondering if anyones had this and if it's got bad side-effects or anything. Aparently it isn't addictive which is why he wants me to have it cos I have to have pain killers so often but he wants me to try supositories (sp?) as well as oral tablets because it's nearer the area which needs the pain relief - feel a bit iffy about that though cos I had supositories when I was little and remember them not being very plesant. Do you think I should brave it and see?

And also he mentioned the Mirena coil and said if I deside to have it he can fit it in while I'm asleep. I don't know wether to or not and wondered if anyone has had it and can tell me about it. Side effects/cramping after it being fitted... etc

Also one last question - does anyone know of or have cyliac disease cos he's testing me for it because I find it hard putting weight on and my bowel symptoms which could be endo could also be that apparently. How's it treated, just cutting out certain foods???

coeliac disease? i think rachie has just been diagnosed with it, so you might want to track her down.

it's treated by cutting out gluten. totally. for life.

it's celiac in the US. coeliac in the UK.

i was investigated for it until they were blue in the face, cause they were convinced i had it, but apparently not.

    hi

i use voltarol for my endometriosis

the only thing that vaguely works for me, only drawback is your supposed to take it after food which is a problem for me as i suffer from appetite loss and nausea when on a period.

i also have the mirena coil; for me it is the best treatment i have had so far. No side effects like the pill, slightly lighter periods=less pain, and it stays there working on its own for 5 years.

try it- theres nothing to lose as if its not for you it can be removed so easily at any time you like :)

    good luck

    Hey Lu_C,

I used to take voltarol for my arthritis. It gave me a few stomach issues (just indigestion really, nothing awful), so I swapped it for a different anti-inflammatory in the end, but I have a stupidly sensitive stomach when it comes to anti-inflammatories, so I wouldn't worry about that too much, just give it a go and see how you tolerate it. I found it good for reducing my pain and inflammation, cross fingers you'll find it helpful too

That's great that you've been given some options, I know it must seem scary at the moment, but at least you're making some progress :) And try and think of your May stuff as a necessary evil - yep, it'd be nice not to have to go through it, but hopefully it'll take you a step further to feeling better :) Here's hoping everything goes well for you......

Regarding Mirena - one of the best choices I have ever made. I had cramping and light spotting for a couple of days afterwards, nothing that painkillers and a hot water bottle couldn't sort out. I've been very lucky as I've had very little bleeding since early Feb (when I had it fitted). No side effects to note, it's wonderful not having to worry about long term contraception, or having to remember to take a pill every day, and the best part about it = no bambinos for at least 5 years :D

Both my nan and my sister have had colonoscopy's - they didn't have to go into hosptial before for the prep though - just got sent stuff to take at home - basically you have to take drugs and drink lots of stuff to flush out your insides - you also have to eat only white rice and chicken and possibly white bread (but i might be imagining the bread) for about 24 hours before hand - they send you a kind of plan thing you have to stick to - I don't think its very pleasant but I would imagine its probably nicer to go through at home than in a hospital.

If your going to be put under general anasthetic then after that you have to not eat for 12 horus or drink for 6 - I imagine the reason why they want to keep you in is because after not eating properly for 24 hours followed by 12 hours with out food etc you'll be pretty weak and they will need to keep an eye on you. Its probably nicer than having it under local anasthetic i imagine...

Thanks for all the replies on my various questions :)

Only thing I'm bothered about with the mirena is one of the side-effects can be depression and I tend to be quite sensitve to hormone changes.

Anyway. So glad I'm finally getting everything sorted out properly. Not looking forward to it but as you say Tates - it's a nessasery evil. Makes me think I'll be able to make some desition on going back to college or something in September (my connexions advisor is going to be well chuffed  )

Got my pre-op appointment on the 5th. Aparently that's two hours  and I'll have a chest x-ray... Don't remember having one last time I had surgery so that's puzzling me a bit.
