by the way, universities are private bodies and only accept the governments money cause of the number of students they pay for
this is going a bit too far in controlling intellectual output, our country produces top scientists for a reason unlike many european universities cause we let universities decide what they want to do
if any section of the higher education sector needs more control from government its social sciences for christ sake
i like how this governemnt wants to turn us into a highly educated workforce witohut backing it with more money for the HEFCE

Plus they're not suggesting that anyone takes control, but that Universities work together so that they specialise in different areas. It seems sensible enough to me
Why does social science need more control?
Five times as much money is spent in this country on research into oil and gas as is spent on researcing renewable fuels - which is not entirely surprising given that Shell, BP and others are heavy sponsors of several science departments. A friend of mine who studies computer science (I won't name the university) was threatened with disciplinary action when he asked awkward questions of a Microsoft exec at a seminar: microsoft sponsor the computer science department.
He who pays the piper calls the tune...
the problem is the funding formula i reckon, and the amount of research funding
and social sciences dept do take on far too many students than we really do need i reckon, but just a result of the stupid 50% higher education target also
why this is parliaments business i do not know, they wanted a highly skilled educated workforce, provide the means for it, dont give the same meagre budget that depts have to fight for scraps for
I personally have not noticed there being that mnay more soical scientists than other depts, depends on the uni i think.
At Sheffield there were lots of Engineers because that is where they were strong for example.........
