JsTJsT Posts: 18,268 Skive's The Limit
Channel 4 have just broke the story now! Pressure finally pushed him too far I guess.

Why aren't politicians sacked when found to have acted improperly?

    BBC Article

IMO his book and his 'visa scandal' pushed him too far. Hopefully a dint in Labour's crown.

As yet he hasn't been 'found' to have acted improperly. Personally I think he was a good Home Secretary. I'll be honest, I haven't been following the story much since it first broke as I don't find that aspect of politics at all interesting but he was one of the few cabinet members I liked!

I wonder if Blair would use this resignation also as a window of opportunity to bury the issue of mandatory id cards by shuffing it off as having been a Blunkett initiative from the outset? Such face saving tactics have been commonly seen in the past, especially when general elections are near to hand.

    Good.

And if he now has the decency to go and hang himself then the job will be complete.

Anyone who says that nazi fuckwad was a good Home Secretary scares me, tbh.

He could always emigrate to the US, I'm sure the neocons would gladly enlist his services. Else he could join any number of policymaking think tanks inside the beltway and rake in the bucks (for what theyre worth these days).

Good, but for the wrong reason.

(I've always considered the visa fast-track to be a perk of the job rather than a resigning issue).

I didn't expect this to be honest. I wonder what will happen now, because someone needs to be the Home Secretary.

I thought this was a wind up.

    Glad it's not.

first of all they cant sack an mp- he /she has to resign or be deselected, eg (i think) they dont get chosen to be on the cabinet or whatever come the next election.

my dad reckons blunkett will be back, if he does come back i think it will be after all the enquiries etc, maybe.

of course i hate the man.. but now hes gone who wil there be to offend everyone. john prescot?

Sky and BBC are suggesting the Education secretary Charles Clarke will be next.

Ah, and not a moment too soon either.

Although I am secretly combating unwarranted feelings of pity...must..fight...harder.

He hasn't resiged as an MP, he's resigned from the Cabinet.

The Cabinet can be changed at any time by the Prime Minister, it doesn't take an election to do that...

To an extent I agree, I don't think that the visa is the reason he should have resigned. He should have gone as soon as it was discovered that he gave a rail ticket to his girlfriend. Paying is back was an admission of guilt, in effect he had committed fraud at best...

yeh however i dont like how he was forced out due to accusations etc its a bit out of order on the guy

the fact he's a facist means politcal spectrum wise im happy, but in terms of principle, nothing was proved and its a bit outters

Agreed. Defraud your local council of benefit payments and you get prosecuted, he got off lightly IMO.

Bye bye David, shut the door on your way out...

technically he was paying for what he believed was his child and its mother, which is perfectly fine under parliamentary rules

Many EU citizens would take the same view, particularly in Italy. If we were a little less idealistic, we might be able to vote in a less hypocritical administration, but our tabloid media puffs us up with all this 'mother of parliament' rubbish. Given that this is Britain, Blunkett, or somebody else, should have known that email would be a ticking bomb, and sought immediately to defuse it. Someone had to go.

imo, it was only a matter of time before he left, he blatently lied not only to his colleagues but too the public aswell, i too think that he got off lightly with only resigning to the back benches, however i feel that if labour get another term then he will be back.

the beeb was saying last night that his going wasn't so much about the visa business, but rather him slagging off the rest of the cabinet.

either way, it's made my week

Its a good thing that he has left, and the right thing too.

Though my pleasure over this has been tainted somewhat by the whole situation with his ex. It just all seems really nasty and if they have got a kid together then I feel sorry for him/her.

    I agree with this.

What would have been best is if he had been sacked for being a right-wing loony, rather than for some crappy excuse of a scandal........

Funny how having an affair with a married woman and getting her pregnant repeteadly is seen as okay, but helping with a visa application is not.

    Talk about fucking priorities...

Still, I'm very glad to see him go. If only we can drop a few of his 'projects', such as the religious hatred bills and the ID cards...

Well Blair said that he wouldn't judge the morality of his cabinet.

An interesting issue actually, should we judge politicians on thier conduct in their personal lives or on their policies?

    I think i'll start a thread.......

its a shame he he went due to personal reasons, mainly cause he really does want to see that kid even if he is being a control freak over it, but noone batted an eyelid at his policies which to me are grotesque

im glad to see the back of him in terms of policy but the fact he went due to sheer constant media publicity, is a shame

What I should like to know is, now that Blunkett has done the honourable thing and refused to "hide behind" civil servants, when will his former boss stop hiding behind the JIC and take responsibility for a far more serious error of judgement? Why is fast-tracking a visa a resignation issue, while taking a country to war without a legal basis isn't? Wasn't there enough email correspondence to bury Blair?

I still feel kind of sorry for Blunkett, even though he sometimes came across as a scary individual, but I hope his going starts a trend.
