quite a scary preposition, all to save money, as a whole 100 mps dont cost that much money for the purpose they serve

the contempt of parties in power to remove democracy is really annoying me now

If it's simply down to 'saving money' then it is a despicable measure.

Same old Tories, same all cutting of essential services and institutions to finance their fucking tax cuts for the middle classes... same old bullshit.

I'm not sure I entirely agree with Aladdin. Look at the facts. Scotland now has its own parliament. Wales has its own assembly. The European Union has seized most of the powers Britain used to have. Do we really need 659 MPs still?

yes we only need blair brown and blunkett to make decisions for us

    such a thing as democracy

i think the tories say it will speed up policy desicions which is equivilent to "we'll put through pointless and repressive measures quickly, with less scrutiny"

There might be a good argument about whether the English parliament would work at its best with the current number of MPs, or a lower one.

But the article appears to suggest that the Tories don't have the best interests of parliament in mind. Their main reason for wanting to cut numbers appears to be "to save money".

    The wrong reasons completely, IMO.

That I'll agree with. It's all very well and good saying they'll make savings, but to the detriment of our democratic process? (or what still exists of it)

What important powers does the EU have over British Parliament?

    I can't think of any..........

What about the power to control our own borders? That was signed away only last month.

So we can't stop goods or people coming in anymore?

That is quite shocking, I thought I would have heard more about it?

So they don't stop illegal immigrants or smugglers anymore, strange..................

Last time i checked it was labour who liked putting through all the pointless and repressive measures.

Seems pointless to me, and it will just increase the MP's workload.

Let's just leave Tony in charge of everything and give him absolute and unchallenged power then.

Hold on... that's more or less the case already. :(

ah but i feel rather disappointed in all parties who are all going for the "lets remove all your rights to preserve your freedoms" attitude

Please explain why cutting the number of MPs is going to take away rights and personal freedoms.

If you are gonna cut numbers like that and have huge constituencies, you might as jsut well go for the whole hog and implement PR and have massive uber-constituencies.

I am against the motion. Just like i am against any undermining of parliaments authority, be it to devolution, the EU, or anything else.

you need to convince less mps to vote for a measure thus removing backbenchers problems

the mps cover a larger constituencies and thus are less likely to represent peoples views

its a bad move no matter what, at the moment the average mp covers 70,000 people and compared to other countries like america they get far less expences perks, despite what the newspapers say

    story finally broken on bbc

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/4125407.stm

it isnt smaller government though, its smaller democracy

cutting specialist advisors, is a bit of a double edged sword though since im sure theyll be more spin ones and les actual information ones

isnt it a bit stupid for michael howard to propose this cause i saw in the paper this morning that most of the MP's that are likely to be cut are going to be tory backbenchers?

all it does is remove power from parliament since most of the amalgamted constituencies will probably be the moderately safe seats since theyre the ones who can get away with more criticism
