World's first gay school

Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
Story

I think this guy comments on it best:
How can tolerance & understanding be achieved by segregating people? This school identifies pupils by their sexuality, surely the opposite of what we're trying to achieve.

What does everyone here think?

I don't think it should be actively seeking to segregate gays from the rest of society, because what tolerance does that teach everyone else? But at the same time... 95% pass rate means something is working, so I say leave them to it. By all means allow straight people there, and it shouldn't be seen as an icon for gays, but rather than a succesful school. I think that schools and sexuality don't mix terribly well.

on one hand it sounds like heaven. but its a cop out -- if i hadnt been at a 'normal' school, i still would have had to learn to deal with intolerance when i left. bettter that its in school

Could say the same about religious schooling.

Maybe though, the gay kids would gain more confidence being around other poofs/lezzers (is that not PC? Bite me...) I mean I know people who've gained a lot from going to gay clubs.

Can't imagine growing up with homosexual feelings is easy... and to understand those feelings... well sometimes it's better to talk...

What classes do they do? Pearl diving and uphill gardening?

Perhaps "ban it" not the best choice of words lukesh, we still have male and female only schools, (and they tend to do better than mixed schools).

Why would it make the issue more hated? At the very least 'normal' kids won't be affected by 'weirdo' homosexuals, surely this can only be seen as a good thing?

You've still not quite explained why it should be banned though, maybe they don't want to mix. While they're trying to get an education.

Ok, so banned is the wrong word, but do you think integrating is helpful while getting an education?

liek with race init. my skool was allmost white. dead racist etc now its dead mulyicultral and hardly any racism.

No, you're still refering to society at large, rather than in a purely academic environment. Think of it this way, knowing that boys and girls learn better separatly, is it better to have mixed schools?

We have more that just school for social interaction. It's not like I grew up without knowing how to interact with boys for going to a girls school.

I think it's an absurd idea myself. That's hardly the point though, is it. The questions are, will it help? and does it matter?

i don't think its a step away from acceptance. i go to an all girls school - the school doesnt breed intolarance against men. how is it different.

like i said earlier -- the idea of being able to go to a gay school sounds to me like heaven because it would have been so much easier.

Exactly, tolerance isn't who you grow up with, it's how you grow up, and is down to a wider society. If you go to school with someone who's gay, is down to what the entirity of society is saying about them, not what they say about themselves. True.

yea -- i think you could go as far as to say that it is BECAUSE of wider society's intolerance of homosexuality that people see the concept of a gay school as problematic, and not infact because it would be the cause of such views

fiend: education isn't just about an academic education. We should also be learning social skills, after people finish their education they often have prejudices, political opinions and things like that which aren't academic but will stick with them for the rest of their life. I think the choice should be there but it shouldn't be labelled a gay school, everyone should have the freedom not to be bullied, but we shouldn't shelter ourselves for one purpose at the expense of another. I could spend the first 20 years of my life in isolation learning maths (my favourite subject ;)) and I may even become one of the world leaders in mathematical thought - but life isn't just about one thing, if you think about it academics makes up a small part of our life - every day we spend more time socialising and more time on other skills that are incredibly important.

on the surface it does seem like a nice idea - no taunting, bullying and everyone understands the choices of everyone else....

but, segregating these children from others is actually going to make them stand out more when local kids realise that they don't go to their school, plus the kids aren't going to have a clue how to deal with prejudice inthe real world when they leave the school, imo.

No absolutly, but you can see my point that it's not just where we're educated that forms out predujices in society, and in fact it can aid acedemic education to be segregated in some way.

As for segregation, only sex is shown to be beneficial.

A school for gays seems a bit bizarre - not least because most teenagers will have all sorts of sexual feelings flowing through their minds that to label them gay at school age can only be harmful in the long term. Banishing bullying is to be encouraged, but that won't happen by providing schools for individual life choices such as sexuality.

wanting equality but wanting seclusion, does wonders for relations between the 2 groups

what difference in education is there, sod all, theres always gona be sex and relationship scandals in schools so whats the point

kids who are picked on are picked on for any reason really, if they suddenly werent gay theyd be picked on for being smart, dumb, tall, short, fat, skinny....... take your pick

seperating fat and skinny kids would do the same, same with tall and short, doesnt make it right, with even less contact with fellow students whose only difference is that theyre probably gay(snce theyre still goriwng up and can be unsure) all it does it exagerate virtually non-existant differences
