Im in the middle of a metabolism assignment and ive jsut read that having lots of vitamin c can help prevent cancer and prevent the development of aids from HIV!
I was just wondering how much vitamin c everyone gets. Who doesnt eat their veggies? and does anyone take vitamin c supplements?

The RDA is 30mg a day I believe, though some people have a lot more than than in pill form.
I hardly eat fruit either. Don't really like fruit. I much prefer vegetables
But yes ... I drink lots of orange juice and one of my favourite vegetables is brocolli so I think I get enough.
here are the foods that contain vitamin c=
blackcurrants (MOST)
parsley
green peppers
sprouts
lemons
strawberries, cauliflour, spinach (equal content)
cabbage
oranges
grapefruit, gooseberries
new potatoes
raspberries, melons, peas
blackberries, tomatoes
bananas
apples
pears, plums (LEAST)
- The RDA of vitamin C is 60mg / day.
Yes, some people do take more than that in pill form, most notably smokers; but - some pills on the market come in 500mg capsules!!!
high doses can aggravate IBS and there have been claims that taking high dose vitamin C tablets over a long period can increase cancer risks.
Yes you're right, I was thinking over it since I posted that and I was going to change it.
As for 500mg in one go, you can take up to about 1000mg in one go without there being any serious problems.
Its water soluble and its not stored in the body so it just washes out.
I'm fairly sure there isnt really a realistic LD50.
also drink at least 2 glasses of grapefruit or cranberry juice a day (i love it in the morning when i have a dry mouth)
and i get fewer colds because of it
Well, you might have fewer colds, but is that a causational link or just a correlation?
For me i take vit b complex as it helps me have more energy, doc put me on it for a while & it helped loads so now i buy it myself. I take vit c as its meant to help absorb the vit b & i don't like many things with vit c in them.
When I can get it I take a sublingal liquid B complex, which you hold under the tongue and is absorbed partly there.
Its in pill form. I don't know a great deal about it too be honest. All i know is when i take it i feel so much better.
Psycosomatic.
Dont call her that, theres no need for name calling.
Not at all. i didn't even know what it was mean't to do before i took it.
Are you telling me that along with the more enegy it gave me, i am also imagining the better hair & nails i have now?
i doubt you're imagining it. vitamin b complex is used for all kinds of things, most notably morning sickness.
I know i'm not.
Where does brocolli come on that list?
I'm not sure it will do a great deal for your hair and nails, but B vitamins are closely linked to ones energy levels, it is needed to turn carbohydrates into glucose, so it can be used by the body. It used to be that we consumed whole grain carbohydrates and they have the needed B vitamins in them, but refined sugers/carbohydrates dont have them, thus making them more difficult to convert.
not sure, wasnt in the book :S
