How to ask my GP for help with depression

Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
Hi,

I am eager to ask my GP for help with my depression. How exactly do I ask for help?

Do I say " Morning? I get seriously depressed. Can you help?"

or.....anyone any advice?

go in with your symptoms, not what you think you have.

just say: i've been feeling low/having problems sleeping/lost my appetite/lost interest in everything/been thinking about hurting myself. whatever it is.

I agree. Just say that you;ve been feeling very low and tell the doctor your symptoms. I'm sure that your doctor will be very supportive, they arnt there to judge you, they're there to help and I'm sure that they can give you some good advice about what to do next etc etc

When i was depressed i tried that kind of approach and he told me its a "teenage thing" (i was 18). I went back about a month later and demanded help so he put me on crappy AD's which made me worse until i stopped them and now im fine.

Just go in tell him/her that you have been feeling low and all your symptoms and then the doc will probably ask you some questions. He/she should be very supportive

i really dreaded going to the doctor and felt so stupid. i sat down. mumbled im not happy, and walked out with ad's. realised that wasnt going to get me anywhere and saw a different doctor that i could talk to.
they ask you questions, so that'll help you a little. just say how youve been feeling, whats been going on etc.

whatever you decide to do just always make sure that with your doctor you are completely honest, i went to my gp years ago with deression, they put me on thioridazine 50mg 2/4 times a day i could not move for months turns out that i didnt tell my doctor that i had a stomach ulcer whhich burst rushed to hospital for operation. dont do that mate just tell him how ur life is but give him/her the whole story so they can make a good diognosis

I remember this too well. It was horrible. I had to explain that the previous night, I'd attempted to kill myself. I explained what I'd done and the doctor referred me onto a specialist after a brief conversation about how I was feeling. He also told me some basic facts about depression, he kept insisting I would get better, though I kept saying otherwise. Wasn't easy.
