Removing new lip piercing...

Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
I had my lip pierced last saturday and as soon as I walked into school on Monday I was sent home. I tried changing school, but it was too late in the year for that, so they said I'd have to take it out.
Can I do this by myself without the risk of infection? and could I use a 'retainer'?

i've always been advised only to wear retainers in healed piercings.

you could take it out yourself without much risk of infection if it's not infected at the moment. just make sure to keep it as clean as you would if the jewellery was still in until it's healed.

but you should never take jewellery out of an infected piercing until the infection has been controlled.

I think your GP is the best person to ask about this, either that or NHS direct.

medical types usually know piss all about piercings. when i had my teeth out, i asked if i could wear a retainer in my tongue so the hole wouldn't close up. and the specialist and anaesthetist both said that a piercing would take days to close up, not hours, so i could just put it back in after. which i thought was odd, cause i'd always been told by people in the piercing know that tongue piercings close up REALLY quickly.

and guess what. it closed up.

i'd ask your piercer. or look at www.bmezine.com

Legally youve gotta be over 18 to have a lip piercing (where i had mine done anyway).

But emm no dont take it out unless you intend on leaving it out. Me among others strongly recommend leaving it in, it will take about half an hour for yours to be well in the process of closing up.

Tell your school you can't take it out because if you take it out it the open wound will get infected and you'll get ill and you'll sue them for making you endanger your health.

    Worth a shot.

Personally, although you've only had it pierced recently, I'd try a retainer. It's not ideal, but never give up straight away. Try and negotiate with your school - try and come to a compromise. Ask them if it would be alright if you could wear a retainer.

If that fails, then take it out and let it heal up.

I think it's 16 with parental consent, 17 or over without.

well im 17 anyway, and my mum thinks its cool

ive managed to buy myself some time till at least monday by saying that if i take it out a blood blister on the inside of my lip (which is actually there) will burst and is quite likely to get infected. is this long enough to put a retainer in?

    thanks for the replies :)

if ur 17 and still in school i'm asuming that you're in the sixth form ye? if it's a case of your school being really anal about how individuals who have every right to decorate themselves how they choose i suggest perhaps trying to find a college close to where you live and going there instead as they won't give a shit what you've got pierced.

No, the law is 16 for piercings, or you have to have parental consent if you're under that age. Tattoos you have to be 18 or over for, with or without parental consent.

probably because your mum has had it in for a while.

    the school rules actually state;

'one ring only. for girls one pair of studded earings. no make up.'

very vague, could even use the one ring only as the ring in my lip :D

have to take it out now, this sucks :(

This is a three year old thread. And that was a pointless comment.
