    They're really, really not.

Trailer trash don't hang around in massive groups in built up areas (Mainly Friday and Saturday nights) shouting abuse and trying to fight anyone that passes.

How do you lot pronounce chav? I would call the above speciman a 'charver'. They've been around for years and have always been called the same thing in the north east.

I've used the word chav or chavi since I was at priomary school. To me it has always been a word with a similar meaning as 'mate'. It's a cacker/gypo word.

If you're going to nit-pick over other people's errors you should really correct your own first.

Yep, I'm from Wiltshire too, although I've always known the word chavvy to mean something like mate or friend, as in "Alright my chavvy".

But yeah, you're right, it's a Romani word meaning son or boy.

I never heard of chav untill people started using it on here I think. To me they were just townies or dicks.

Yep, too right, people have been using that word in Wiltshire for as long as I can remember. Which is longer than most of you have been alive, and it meant friend then. So I think we have precedence. :D

(Mind you, I spose we hijacked it from the cackers... along with a few others!)

Same with the word 'pikey'. It means gyspy, it's NOT a ned.
