I was not impressed, having previously stated to God that by no means should I start my period a day before my 14th birthday. Didn't work, obviously.
My mum never explained them, she just gave me one of those little tampax booklets you used to get a few months beforehand. I was thoroughly confused, they made periods look positvely life enhancing.
I got dragged down to Waitrose by my mum to but bleedin' always ultra when all I wanted to do was finish playing Sonic the Hedgehog.
Not happy in the slightest!

Ah, somebody else who tried this particular method. Didn't work for me either - I was most disgruntled.
I was 12. It was somewhat ironic (in a cruel, cruel way), because at school on the morning of the fatal day we'd had one of those insipid Period Talks. On the way home that afternoon I unwittingly announced that I didn't intend to start mine for at least another year (like I had a say in the matter - ha!). 10 minutes later: oh, bollocks...

My first period and, even funnier, first attempt at inserting a tampon, stories are best left till we have all had a bottle of wine and are gathered round the camp fire with lots of chocolate.

Im a lad and I think lads should be educated more about periods too. If we dont really know whats going on then we're bound to be a bit baffled. I have lots of sympathy for you girls though. Especially the ones who have lots of problems on their period. We dont half cop the flack for it. Everything's always our fault when you girls are on and we just stand there bemused wondering what we'd done this time. At the risk of sounding even worse, i wondered if you could tell me why girls seem to get err, well, hornier before their periods? maybe its just every girl i've been out with but i wondered if it was more common?
and another thing, being male an all, we dont really know what its like. i cant imagine what it'd feel like to bleed without being wounded, so girls, what does it feel like?

as soon as i told my mum she broadcasted it to evry1 she new, that i had started and i was so embarassed. she started saying that iw as growing up so fast and that soon i will be having children of my own
i was like, hold on a minute, im only 13 and im not gonna have a baby like now so calm down mum.
shes probably just worried cos theres so many teenage pregnacys nowadays to what there was when my mum was my age.

My mother had been preparing me for the day since I was three. A matter of fact, when I used to play house and played the mother, I used to pretend to put on a pad.
The day finally came, I got out of bed, circled the date on the calendar, went to my mother’s room, got a few sanitary napkins, took a shower, and then went to hangout with friends with absolutely no intention of telling anyone.
However, this was a day that my mother was looking forward to for so long that I felt inclined to tell. I went outside and told her that I had something to tell her that would make her extremely happy, but all she’d have to do is keep her mouth shut or I’d deny that anything ever happened. As soon as I said that, she knew.
My mother screamed, “You’re a woman!” She started hugging and kissing me—this is a non-touchy feely type of woman. She started shouting saying that she was going to buy me tampons and crap. Embarrassed, I said, “Jinx!” Trying to play it off as I was just joking, but she didn’t buy it.
Then she started saying crap like, “I don’t want you bringing any male friends into your room anymore. Now you can’t play around with boys. Sex is out of the question until you get a job and your own place. I’m serious, absolutely no boys. Do you want birth control? Have I ever taught you about the gynecologist? By the way, congratulations!”
It was a sensory overload!
As a tomboy, all of my friends were boys. The only way they were allowed over was if they stayed in my room and now they aren’t allowed anymore. What exactly is meant by “play around?” What is all of this no boy, no sex, and birth control business? The gynecologist does WHAT!?! Sticks what where!?! Congratulations or my condolences—This is the fucking end of my life.
Terrified, I didn’t leave the house for days. My friend’s had no clue what was wrong with me, but just about everyone else in the neighborhood did.
As soon as I was out of her sight, I heard her get on the phone. My mother called my father on the job, “Congratulations! She is a woman. Should we throw a party?” She called her friends saying, “I don’t have a baby anymore!” She called my siblings, “Don’t tell Lanni that I told you, but… SHE’S A WOMAN!!!!”
For the next month people, some of whom I hardly knew, were congratulating me on my way to and from school, at church, in stores. Uber embarrassment.
mancmanomyst, I don’t know why we get hornier just before a period, consider it a blessing.
How does it feel?
It feels like you are bleeding through your freaking crotch! Otherwise, I guess there is no feeling really. Some females cramp, but I don't get that stuff.
I remember having a periods talk in junior school. I think it's sad when girls come on really young, not only is it expensive, but it's a time of your life where you should be concerned about other stuff.
I do remmeber seeign ym dad for the first time he smiled and hugged me for no apparent reason-totally giving away he knew. that was all that was said!!!!

when you first start you don't usually gush blood everywhere you just get a little bit so there is time to get towels etc in time.
i started mine when i was 13. I hated going to school the next day wearing a sanitary towel it felt like a nappy! i was so paranoid that people would be able to see that i was wearing one and was really embarrassed, lol. i will agree with the others and say horray for the pill but i would also say an even bigger horray for tampons!!
