Save the CD?

Indrid ColdIndrid Cold Posts: 16,688 Skive's The Limit
I have an old game (Atlantis II) which comes in 4 CDs. 2,3 and 4 work fine, but disc 1 is so scratched that certain parts can't be read at all. The company that made it has closed, so there's no way to order it or something (not to mention what a hassle it would be), so I was wondering if there's any way to save it, or find a way to copy the files.

there are things you can get in pc world / maplins that will scrape off the plastic bottom of a cd and buff it to a shine. that'll fix nearly every scratch. oddly the top of the cd is more prone to damage, since it's that side where the material used to store the data is at.

you could always try and get a copy from ebay if you cant be arsed to repair it, or perhaps a download would be possible, after a certain time some games become "abandonware" which means it's totally legal to exchange the game around on websites.

    Go get CDCheck from http://www.elpros.si/CDCheck/

My Medal Of Honor CD 1 was scratched and wouldn't fully install, only about 10%. I got this CDCheck program and it recovered the bad data from the CD and so I was able to play it again :D. If you do give it a go, just recover the file/s to your hard disk and burn it to another CD. If you know which file is causing the problem then just choose to recover that file.. if not, do the whole CD. It's pretty easy to use.

It's a 30 day free trial so it all works fully.

    Thanks! I'll try that.
As for the machine noog described, I remember seeing an advert about a store that does such things. If that program doesn't work, I'll try there.

If the cleaning/repairing/data recovery doesn't work, then all I can suggest is to have a look on ebay/QXL for another copy of the game. There are also plenty of retro gaming specialists out there who specialise in old consoles and computer games.

The program didn't work, just like normally the drive stopped reading at a certain point. And ebay and such are out of the question, I have no trust at all for online money transactions.
