    Modern? Hmm. Depends what you're calling modern? Modern music, modern housing, modern politics, modern fashion, etc.
    As a rough guide, the "modern world" as we know it, I'd say anything post Victorian/Edwardian could be considered modern. Though most modern things I can think of are post Second World War. Ok, so if you push me, I'll say that I think of 1940's/50's onward.

    surely we are now living in a post modern society - well infact the 60's and 70's were all about modernisum, then the late 70's and 80's were post modernist - the 90's were ironic and now we are living in the post ironic era?

    Or should I stop listening to academics??

    It depends how you are using the term.

    To say something is modern is to say that it is of the time, as in current.

    However, to use the term with a capital letter, as in such and such is Modern, then thats different. This is the movement of art and building design which grew out of the re-building after WW2.
