There's lots of free scripts out there but can't find exactly what I want.

I want to build a free site for people interested in inventing and innovation.

Ideally it would have:

Forum (like this one)
Calendar
User Profiles (like ones on Ryze or Friendster)
News Section

Something like Xoops

http://www.xoops.org/

but does anyone know of any others?

Nah I'd go for PostNuke. It's the easiest thing in the world to install and configure and you can add some pretty cool skins and modules.

    www.postnuke.com

www.projectsenso.com - That's quite a clean/minimal PN site but still quite nice. My old site was done with PostNuke and looked pretty good.

    www.php.resourceindex.com
    www.hotscripts.com

personally I like to install phpbb2 and spend about 2 days hacking it, then write my own frontend that utilises phpbb's userbase and other bits :-)

those two sites are the best php resources ive seen anyway. and there are entire sections on portal softwares
