My internet

BillieTheBotBillieTheBot Posts: 8,722 Bot
Ive just got NTL broadband, and its connected all the time. Like as soon as I turn my computer on, it works all the time. Should this happen? Should I turn the modem off when Im not wanting the internet?

Im just used to (from my mum and boyfriend) people having to connect and disconnect off it.
Beep boop. I'm a bot.

Are you sure your not going through a router/modem, because with a normal borandband modem you have to still dial into to your service to get connected, or at least I did when I had a modem. With my router/modem I'm connected as soon as I am booted into Windows.

Any way, you can turn your modem off when your not using the Internet, it won't hurt. Just make sure your firewall is tunred on all the time.

You've got it in one. Pretty much anything that is high speed will connect as soon as you enter Windows. I first experienced this 6 years ago at my uni. The halls of residence were all hooked up. You just plug your LAN card into the wall and you're in. NTL does the same except that you plug your cable modem into the LAN card.

Your Internet service is always on but like I say, you have still dial in to get connected with a modem.

Dial? Nah, NTL doesn't use DUN. You're thinking about ADSL. NTL uses cable.

Thank you for the replies-I think im just going to unplug my modem when Im not using it, because I have my laptop on pretty much all the time for music listening. I just wasnt sure if it was supposed to happen like that or not! :)

That is a very good point. I'm not sure. It was recommended by someone I dont just leave it running all the time.

my NTL internet stays on 24/7, theres no point in turning it off.

Also my cable modem wont overheat because i dont use a cable modem, my internet comes through my NTL Digital Set top box, so as thats always on, my internet is always on.

I didn't know that NTL cable modems overheat...?! Mine has been turned on and connected constantly since June 2003. No power cuts no nuffin' except having to reset it a couple of times.

There shouldn't be any reason to turn off an "always-on" service modem or router. You should be able to leave them running 24/7. If they overheat then they are faulty.
