problem 1: weight & lifestyle

Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
This is a very hard article for me to write. It's always hard to admit to a problem but humiliation has always been my worst fear, despite its regular occurance in my life. Admitting it is always the first step to resolving it though, and i'm determined to come out of this with a on my face. I'm a 19year old male, coming from a working class mancunian environment. My family has a history of weight problems. Apparently some Great Uncle of mine is in the guiness book of records for being the heaviest man to ever live. Not a good start. Most of my family are over-weight and comfort eating is a family trend. Not that i'm blaming genes or whatever. People who blame their weight problems on genes are looking for excuses to stay the way they are rather than looking to do something about it, but thats just my opinion. The lifestyle thats set when you are young shapes your life to come. Its no wonder i've got so many problems. I was an incredably sensitive child. I always opted for adult company and felt arkward with my peer groups. Ive always been quite a chubby kid. I admit it, i love my food. It seems food was always encouraged with me. My parents gave me adult portions as a child and food was always the source of reward and comfort. I got bullied at school, because of my personality and nature. I was simply easy pickings. Wouldnt fight back, easy to upset and i stuck out from the other kids. Anyway, the more the bullies upset me, the more i comfort ate. Even worse, I stopped eating infront of people other than my family. I never ate breakfast, was never encouraged to. It wasnt routine in my family. And now i wasnt eating dinner either. My stomach used to rumbble like hell in class and it was so embarrasing. So by the time i got home i was exhaused and id snack on chocolate and crisps before eating large portions of fatty foods for tea then id get hungry before i went to bed and id eat then too. It must sound disgusting to normal people but for me, this was all i knew. This was normal. My weight has followed a certain formula for most of my life, my age in years + 1 = my weight in stones. Not good! As for exercise, my parents worked full time and never really had the time or energy to help me there. Exercise wasnt encouraged. Far more attention was put into accademics. It's such a shame really because Im not the type that would rather do anything than hard work. I absolutely loved playing football. I was rubbish but i got so much enjoyment out of it. I was such a show off when there was a crowd. My weight problem might have been much worse without all the lunch hours i spent kicking a football around. I still wasnt exercising half as much as everyone else would. It was hard. I was carrying double the weight of the other lads so it was always going to be a struggle. Anyway, thats how i ended up in this position. Its a horrible position to be in, its a viscious circle. You eat because you're unhappy. You're unhappy because of your weight (amongst other things). I've been through a lot recently but some positives have come out of it. I've learnt that viscious circles are viscious both ways. If i start the ball rolling in the other direction it will gather momentum. I could do with some support to help me through though! . People don't understand. Nobody would. We judge by groups instead of individuals. Im not Jonathan Lambert, the person with problems, Im just another pie eating fat ****ard. That hurts so much. This sounds weird but when I see other fat people i just think the same as you lot, what a pathetic site, lose some weight! Now im acting on those thoughts. I will do it, im determined to prove people wrong. You only have one life, you have partial control of your destiny so make sure you do control the things you can control!
I hope I havent bored anyone too much. Im really glad of the chance to speak out!

    mancmanomyst,

People can be so cruel. Don't feel so bad when they tease you because they're just doing it to make themselves feel better. Anyone who has any self-confidence doesn't need to make someone feel badly to feel better about themselves.

Don't lose hope. You can change the way that you look if you really want to. Your genes may be working against you, but you can overcome them rather than use them for an excuse.

I'm a firm believer that you can do ANYTHING that you put your mind to, whether its losing weight, learning something difficult, or whatever. You just have to recognize that it will be more difficult than you initially believe and have faith in your ability to follow through with it.

One of my best friends used to weigh about 250 pounds. During his freshman year at university he decided that he was tired of being heavy and started working out five or six days a week to do something about it. After doing this steadily for about three years he now weighs 70 pounds less and because he put on a lot of muscle, he probably lost close to 100 pound of fat.

Hell, I've lost about 20-30 pounds of beer fat I put on my first year of uni.

    So I have some advice.

First of all, you have to speed up your metabolism. There are several tricks to this, and I do mean tricks because your body has evolved for thousands of years to slow down how quickly it breaks down food as a survival mechanism.

The easiest thing you can do is to drink lots of water. Whenever your body doesn't have enough water it slows down your metabolism because it needs water to break down food. Drink constantly. Eight glasses of water a day is just a start, doubling that is a better idea.

Eat regularly. If you starve yourself during the morning your metabolism pretty much grinds to a halt. Eating a few big meals a day isn't a great idea either because it helps keep your stomach stretched out. I eat 5 or 6 small meals a day. By small meals I mean something like a sandwich and an apple, or a yogurt and some juice.

Start out small. Try light exercise at first. A long walk everday, for example. Or a bike ride. Anything that gets your heart pumping is a good idea, but it becomes an even better idea when you do it for a half an hour or longer. Not to get too technical, but the best exercise for weight loss is something that gets your heart rate up to about 120-140 beats per minute.

You said that you like to play football (Goddammit, the proper name of the game is soccer ) well, keep on doing it. It's always easier to exercise when the activity is fun.

So start out with that. I'm always around so if you want to ask some questions, just post, there's also another fitness freak around here- Alistair who's just as knowledgeable if not more.

I wish you the best of luck.

thanks alessandro. I didnt know that about water and metabolism. The water around here is horrible though and i cant afford to spend so much on mineral water. Does it have to be pure water or is no added sugar cordial good enough?

I want to join a gym but it all comes down to money and i havent got any! I love walking and I walk when I have to go places unless im in a rush. I used to love swimming too and i was good but i havent swam for years because of the stick i get. Hopefully when i can lose enough weight to be happy with myself, i'll be able to go swimming again!

Yeah, we have shitty water in LA too. That's what happens when it runs through the desert a few hundred miles to get here. Picks up all sorts of foul tasting minerals.

So I don't know what to tell you. I would suggest one of those water filters that are about twenty dollars here (10-15 pounds I think) they work decently. The water thing is important for weight loss not to mention it helps out your kidneys.

Pure water works best. I don't know what no sugar cordial is, could you explain?

I know that it seems like getting healthy is expensive. It definately can be. But things like walking and swimming are free. I understand your hesitancy to go to the pool (why don't people mind their own business?), but it is probably the best way to lose weight. Constant swimming can burn anywhere from 500 to over 1000 calories an hour. And all you need is a pool and some swim trunks.

I was a butterflier in high school. My senior year a kid joined who had never swum before and just by doing the practices (about 2 and a half hours a day), he lost 50 pounds in three months.

Just think about this, if you lose the weight, not only will you feel better about yourself and be teased less, but you reduce your risk of getting diabetes (nasty disease) and will increase your life expectancy.

Go ahead and ask us any questions. There are a few of us here who've been in similar situations or know something about the subject. Like PussyKatty said, you can find something fun for exercise too.

I'm suprised Alistair hasn't been here yet. Has anyone seen him lately?

swimming isnt free around here and we have to share the pool with cockroaches...lol. cordial is what you might call squash or juice? the stuff you dilute with water?

i need to lose a lot of weight before id even consider getting back in the pool, im just too ashamed of my body. I bought an exercise bike a week ago and in 5 days i clocked up 100k but its broke already,
its ashame because i really enjoyed it.

My family has a history of diabetes, so i may end up with that anyway. Its the heart disease bit i really dont want!

Ive asked my doc to refer me for a special meal replacement diet called lipotrim, its like slim fast but a hell of a lot better. You're supposed to lose a stone a month on that (sorry about talking in terms of stones, im not metric yet...lol). Its very expensive though!
