WLAN card faulty?

Just been helping my dad out and his signal strength on his laptop keeps going from no sginal to good, to very good, to poor and so on. He is about 5 foot form the modem and so I am wondering if there is a fault with the card. I know know the plastic bit on the card feels very loose.
