changing pm's

Should there be a general election whenever there is a change in PM?

When Thatcher resigned, there was no general election when Major took over (evidently Major simply won a leadership election of Tory MP's).

people dont vote for the PM

whichever party has the most MP's is the majority party, and the leader of that party is the PM

so no, you just appoint a new party leader

What are you suggesting? A general election everytime a Prime Minister resigns?

i don't think its that common for a PM to resign in office for it to be an issue, why should there be one anyway, if the people vote a certain party to do 4 years then that party will do 4 years, the PM is just the head of that party.

Exactly - essentially we vote for the party, not for the PM.

You didn't vote Blair, you voted Labour.

I have to agree, there shouldn't be elections for new Prime Minister's mid term. Merely because the British electoral system is designed around voting for Political Party's not single Party leaders such as in the United States.

But you have to look at the reasons behind Thatcher's resignation. It was because she had lost the support of her party, not because she had lost the support of the voters. Hell, Major won the next election, so clearly the Tories were still popular. That and the Kinnock-effect.

Worth noting that the Queen doesn't have to ask the leader of the winning party to serve as her PM.
